The more I think about the car issue, the more I think I need something reasonably similar to the Tino. Any smaller and I'd seriously miss the boot space. Any bigger and I'd be stung by increases in tax, insurance and fuel costs. I am wondering about a Toyota Corolla Verso. If any of you are familiar with the Tino and the Verso, I'd like to know how you think I'd find it.
Thanks.
Looking in Autotrader (it thinks I'm still in Bath) I found a few Versos within 100 miles, but the majority had Star Wars mileages or were quite expensive as replacements for an older car.
One of the better ones I found was this:

I always start with Autotrader when I'm looking for a car/van.0 -
Thanks Dave.
At the moment I'm inclined to cough up the extra dosh and get something quite a bit newer than the one I'm replacing - if only because I don't want to have to go through this again any sooner than I have to. My usual strategy is to buy cars at 5 years old and hope they last another 5 years before conking out, which I think the Tino would have done if it hadn't got rear-ended. It's fortunate that this has happened in school holidays. It would be even more inconvenient in term time.
So, replacing the Tino is happening a year or two earlier than I hoped, but then I'm getting more out of the insurers than I would have got in part exchange if I'd run it into the ground. The letting agent should be returning my deposit for my rented house some time soon, so what with that and the insurance payout on the Tino and a few other bits and pieces, I should have at least £4k in cash, and I can add another £4k onto my home loan, giving me a max budget of £8k to play with. I was wondering about this one.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Professor Cox sends his apologies but says he couldn't get round to yours Doozer as he was busy round mine, showing me his very large telescope;). Well he was in my dreams anyway:o.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? That's a much better car and colour, Lydia, and if you can afford it, why not? Something in demand, like the Verso, is never going to be cheap
I agree with your strategy on cars, though mine was 6 when I bought it. It's now done 6 years and....Oh!:(0 -
I'm not participating in the car discussion because I don't know about cars, I just know about the car I chose and why I chose it... part of why is because of my geography and very limited access to cars to be able to see a lot to choose... in fact, having chosen a model it still took over a month before one came up for sale. Drove hundreds of miles looking around.
And, if somebody chose what I said, then something went wrong, I'd feel responsible forever.0 -
My strategy for cars is:
- Pay cash
- Buy one that does everything you want/need it to, and a few things you dream it'll do
- Buy something about 3-5 years old if you can afford it
Current car had to:
- be fuel efficient
- be able to carry a lot of stuff easily in the rear
- potentially have enough room for me to sleep in it
- be able to be used as a beach hut
It does all of that and more.0 -

Mine has usually been to go with the flow ''something'' comes a long.. I 've been interested enough twice to influence with what that ''something'' is by choosing it over something else. with the small car I had that died last year however, it was different.I knew I wanted THAT car. I tried others and they weren't the same. I wish it hadn't died: I spent too much keeping it alive.I have that tendancy...taking them to the breakers having poured hundreds /thousands over years patching them up to total lack of economic viability.
Because I have no knowledge or much interest I have sometimes dreamt of leasing....changing while its still ''fresh'' and having less worry about what you'll do when it dies. I also thought, this time about going to a car auction, but decided I really want to part with very little money.
My dream car now is impractical (tesla), and others I'd like too expensive(tesla! or a big, lux four x four...) or trouble ridden (freelander). I like a car to have a decent radio and heating. I love that autopilot thing for motorways, where you don't have to keep your foot on the accelerator. I've only used that in my dad's car and it took a bit of getting used to. I quite like heated seats.0 -

I've never had autopilot, but being 100 miles from the nearest motorway this isn't an issue
Heated seats? Didn't know they existed!0 -

lir NO!
I am not thanking this as a joke...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

My strategy for buying a car is
Is it under £500
It is diesel
Has it done not too obscene mileage.
Does it run.
Is it big enough to fit us all in.
Then I run it into the ground and repeat....current car cost me £461 via Ebay 3 and a half years ago.
The strategy when I was married
Which car is the boss's wife bored with?
We would replace every 3 years with her cast offs which generally averaged an approx 6 year old car...we were due to upgrade only a few short months after we seperated.
My dream at the moment is to get a car in the new registrations, so 01 plate and higher...I'm still stuck in the early 90's at the moment. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0
