Fun and games in our household at the moment.....both younger ones threatening to set off now.

Middle son because he has become hopelessly confused in one of his subjects as the teacher has seemingly ignored his Aspergers and difficulties with verbal understanding (he has a verbal understanding IQ at learning disability level), has left things unspoken and assumed the students will connect the dots, so now he doesn't know whether he is coming or going, has tied himself up in knots (not literally!) and has now given up. This subject is one of his strong ones, one he was going to take in year 10/11 (he is currently doing a half GCSE). This was not helped by the teacher giving him an attitude to learning of 4 (not good) despite him trying his hardest but being completely confused. He has tried to ask the teacher for help (as have I) but she is very dismissive, tells him to look on the website but not where or what on the website (he needs this clearly defined) and just doesn't understand why he can't pick up the same things in the same way as the other students and refuses to let him write the instructions down or make notes to remind himself...something he needs because of his horrendous short term memory (brain damage).

The head of the subject is now going to speak to middle son and see what can be done to help him...but I fear it may be too late as he has completely lost his confidence in the subject.

His attitude to learning has always been very good at high school, he is usually very co-operative, eager to learn and one of the high achievers but this is really threatening to bleed over to other areas of his schooling and I don't really want to go back to the dark days of his early years and school where he was permanently excluded because his needs were not being addressed.

The second issue I have with middle son is the christmas dinner, usually it is the traditional dinner but this year, they have decided to do burger and chips (apparently by majority vote), seems fairly tame but a huge issue to anyone on the autistic spectrum where a christmas dinner is just that, a traditional christmas dinner. He has been stropping and tantruming like mad over it because (in his eyes), it is wrong...and apparently he is not the only one, the school are having the same problem with all the ASD children plus some 'normal' ones.

He has threatened to just walk out of school when the years 10 and 11 leave (they don't have to stay for dinner) and is being a complete stick in the mud about it all...probably more so because of the first issue, an unsettled middle son does not make for an open and pliable boy.

Youngest is being youngest and not coping with end of term where normal routine goes out of the window and they start doing 'fun' stuff. He likes completely structured school or he gets unsettled and scared.

I have spoken to the senco for the school and she has suggested I could keep them both off on Friday (last day of term), pick them up after period 1, or pick them up after form...she thinks finishing the term tomorrow would be best for youngest at least as period 1 will be games etc, which could put him out for the start of next term but has left the decision up to me....and I don't know what to do for the best! If they finish the term tomorrow, what does that teach them? If they go in for period 1 and youngest kicks off, what do I do then? Arggghhhh

They have to learn at some point that things are not always the same and they have to adapt but alongside this, they also need to be kept settled so they can learn (and it's not particularly nice for the teachers and other students if they become unsettled), and I really, really don't want to go back to the dark days again.

It is at times like this that I miss being part of a couple...there is no-one to discuss it with, to share the responsibility with.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Just to let you all know, I investigated the grabbit board today.

    I'm not going back. Too risky!:D

I am looking forward heartily to seeing James tonight - travelling to Leicester for this one. Apparently they've got a decent range of t-shirts. I may make an investment...:)

Still haven't finished that book by the way.:o
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

This is meant to be a nice thread.

I am nice! That's why I want my hen's lives to be nice. If they suffer at the end, that wouldn't be nice, would it?

Anyway, this applies only to old and/or ill birds, or 'cockerals.' It's not like I'll be doing it every week. :)

Hello & welcome to Fabion. We're a decent bunch; the acceptable face of this board, in fact. ;)

I ventured over to the grabbit board at the weekend...proved to be very handy as they had a grabbit for cake stands and I needed (very cheap) cake stands for the wedding.

Saw some other stuff that I liked but didn't really need so scarpered pretty damn fast!

A wise decision Sue! get the impression it could be quite easy to make a significant number of "impulse" purchases...

I can't afford impulse purchases at the moment...:(

    I'm usually considered nice too.

Why do you say usually? Kinda suggests there are times you aren't...;)

I think the Senco has got it right. 'Normal' school will have been suspended to some degree , so they will have already adapted to a point they can cope with. Schools are insane places at Christmas, and while my experience is in primary, I can't imagine secondary being a whole heap different.

The other issue rests with the HoD, but a break now may help. No one will want middle son to slip back, but teachers slip too and may need reminding! It's a given that not all will fully 'get' it
