If Nicky Haslem says that then he's quoting. It's originally from the Victorian "arts & crafts" bloke William Morris. The quote is "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." So you're allowed unbeautiful things if they're useful, lir, and you can have useless beautiful things, just nothing that's both useless and unattractive.

Sure its my mistake not Halsem's! don't tell DH he can have useless beautiful things....he's a collector of weird bits of plastic...beautiful to him....and bones we find digging, And shells..and wood that's a fnny shape. And stones he likes the look of and........

You're still in time. I did some more last weekend. They are such champions...they'll be fine if you get them going soon. I always do mine early because they are ''copers'' but my mother always sows hers late, because they are so fast. :)

    Evening all,

I've had such a lovely weekend. Car had to go to garage yesterday which is in a town about 15 miles from here, so dropped it off and bought a 1 day Arriva Herts bus pass for £5.50 and meandered through all the little towns looking in the tiny boutiques and junk shops and then hopping on the bus and going to the next one. I'll have to leave the car at home more often, I could never do this normally, it would be too much of a faff parking everywhere. It was such a gorgeous day as well to do it.

Hertfordshire peeps, I drove past Stanborough Lakes recently and it looked a nice place to go for a walk and a picnic and maybe take a rowing boat out. Any of you done that? Any tips? I can't see a website for it.

You'd think, living where I do, that this kind of thing would be all over the place... well it's not.

I clicked your link, looked at what I'd do ... £132 for 2 days, or £10/hour. Bit pricey don't you think! It might be "fun" to do, but then the equipment's the killer. I'd only do something I could afford to continue to do.

I just did a quick Google. £80/day 30 miles from here, or £20/hour.

    Found another: 2 hour introductory course £70, 3.5 hour afternoon/evening expedition £85.

Plenty to do without paying out a fortune. You can hire rowing boats on the second lake very cheaply and you can wander round the lakes quite freely. Decent outdoor play area from what I remember. There was an outdoor swimming pool a few years ago, not sure if it is still there.

Can be very crowded in Summer with lots of screaming kids.

    What kinda business?;)

The weather is looking up. Everyone is starting to think about holidays now (as in when to take time off. Anecdotally, the majority of people I work with are going without hols this year...)

I need to get my greenhouse set up this coming weekend. I have decided this year to grow: peas, beans, tomatoes, lettuce and beetroot.

Regarding sweet pea, do I need to get that in now? I was going to do that as a bee encourager...

Oh, & I'm off to see elbow tonight.:j
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I saw them when they supported U2 at Wembley. Preferred them to the headliners I'm afraid to say.
