You are well within the realms of excel then.

Viva has a good point about making sure the data is clean so that you can run the 'report by hospital' without finding 'XYZ Trust' doesn't match 'XYZ (Trust)' and so on.

I have nothing to do at work at the moment - perhaps I could persuade my boss that giving you a day of support could qualify as a marketing opportunity - are you a budget holder?! Both Access and Excel are things I do.

I am really too young to know about Gary and Phil but for some reason 'Out in the Fields' was one of my teenage angst songs...

200+ for this study, others will be more others will be less. I have to organise approx 6 studies... :(

each patient will have initial B and S samples, then pre and post surgery B and S samples, then B and S samples every 6 months until 5 years, mortality or relapse. I have different numbers of B and S samples and I need to know how many of each samples are left and where each and every one of them is stored.

    edit: thank you!! :)
    I think....

I was going to suggest the shame re a share although I understand this may not work for you but may be with 2 in a 3 bed place?

SS I know we are not local but I have a brand new 22 inch tv/dvd/monitor from tesco plus a pc (fairly old but fine for internet/word/powerpoint) which need to go on ebay but I'm sure if you were interested I could let you have it for mates prices...

Aww thanks....at the moment it is looking like mum and dad will come to the rescue re the pc but I have also been looking for a TV/DVD combi recently (ok, dreaming about one :rotfl:) as my old one is just about on its last legs. It is another thing that has done well, it was part of my divorce settlement and it wasn't young even then!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    ....And Phil.

This lot maybe don't know who you are talking about! :rotfl:(Except Sue, who's not here ATM.) Still, I haven't much idea about their statistical discussion, so that's evened things up. :D

You are of course correct, I know exactly who you are talking about.
We saw Gary Moore in concert as we were huge fans (Empty Rooms being my favourite), alas the concernt was poo, he was late on stage and then only played for 20 minutes....we all booed, so he came back on for another couple of songs, swore his way off stage and that was it.

We went off him rather quickly after that.

I taught both of Phil's kids. Nice girls, who'd turned into very personable young ladies, when I last saw them.....which was a long time ago now.

    Gosh, I feel old!

Yes, that was poo indeed :)
I liked his playing style, could shred like the best but always retaining that clean, soulful, sometimes melancholic sound.

Nice one. There was documentary on Thin Lizzy a week or so ago on BBC3 or 4. Damn they were good!! Sadly never saw them live, but Phil was a genius in his songwriting, bass playing and vocals.

Too right! The best way round this problem is to have an input screen on each spreadsheet with drop-down boxes. That's then linked to the data, held on a separate tab, by a bit of VBA. It's less than a day to programme and test that, but of course there's the learning curve with VBA.

If you don't want to do that, I recommend one of two courses:

    a) Code as much as possible with numeric codes. So, instead of XYZ Trust, the user inputs the number 3. That makes it rather easy to extract data as well as saving typing for the user. They just have a crib sheet with the codes on, and if they are doing plenty of input they will soon learn them anyway. If there's already some data collected, it's probably easier to convert that now than when there's even more data collected.

    b) Let the users type the data in in long form but have error checks on the data file that show up unexpected data.

I much prefer a), but you'll still need to do error checking with that.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

There's just one other thing I should have mentioned.

If you go to spreadsheet 3, say, you can click Data ... Filter ... Autofilter. This puts drop down boxes at the top of the data, so you can very easily then see all the data collected for a particular patient id.

Best to make a copy of the data spreadsheet before doing this, ofc.

Did you find a copy of the magazine?

Someone got me a copy. I haven't met up with them yet to get it off them.:)

I'll post a review, & if possible a scan for nice peeps (might be better trying that in the other place:o)

LJ, if you are around, have you got a hangover? I was thinking about you last night, about how you rarely drink yet your beloved Wolves beating the mighty Man U must surely have sent you to the local in need of a celebration! Or was it like last week, you want to be out celebrating but were actually at work?

    :D:D:D:D:D

jellyland is a little happier today!:)

Not getting carried away with it though, in the same way as not getting too downbeat last thursday.

    Didn't have anything to drink.

Was supposed to be working at the weekend, but cried off, as basically I'm too tired! (Zzzzzzz smiley)

    Very quickly....

I have an aversion to excel & access, so basically the last 2-3 pages of this thread are pretty much gobbeldigook to me.:o

My colleague (sat not far away from me) is persistently "encouraging" me to get some databases set up.

Regarding the glasses, they put a coating on the lenses to make them more scratch resistant. That has broken down on 1 lense. The only way to fix it is replace the lenses.

I now have to make a decision, just replace the lenses, or go the whole hog & have new frames too.

FWIW I last had new glasses 5 years ago.

    Decisions...
