God, I love that. Loads of blurb about how you felt as you picked each individual stone.

The yummy mummys eat that sort of nonsense up
grrr yummy mummys .... drive me to absolute distraction. SOOO annoying. However, I realise that to succeed, I do need to learn to develop that writing style. But ... it's SO FALSE!!!!! And they're IDIOTS!!!

    :)

Perhaps I can design a nice collection of stuff on a dangly that will hang from those doggy !!!!!! bags I pointed out the other month. PooCharms :)

I think if you are selling on-line, you should exploit the Cornish connection. ;)

    Unfortunately, I think someone's nabbed 'Land's End' :(

    'Lizard' has some unfortunate connotations.

    I'd also discard Liskeard....

'Lamorna' has a nice ring to it though! :)
    Might be moving though :)

    Names .... so hard.

I planned to milk the Cornish thingy, but then so do the other 3000 arts/crafts people down here. Loads of competition, it's like craft central.... all the yummy mummys with their 2-3 ponies, in their 4-5 bedroom detached houses with a 'studio' and kiln out there. All busy making noise and a few shiny pennies, while somebody else has actually paid for their life. I think most are migrants from London, city types with their House in the Country and their 2-3 holiday lets.

    She needs an edge.

Stones chosen to encourage friendship or true love or to enhance positive thought or wealth or whatever. Add that to pretty colours and chic, simple designs and you have to be on to a winner.

Everything is in the head when it comes to sales.

You can't compete at the bottom end of the market. A friend of mine had on a very pretty bracelet the other day. £1.25 from Primark.
You say I can't compete ... but that's because you've got a Primark. People in big cities forget there are thousands of people without Primarks. And people do like to buy online. And people will buy something they like just because they buy stuff, any stuff, so long as there's stuff to buy.

Anyway, until I've actually made something, got a photo and worked out where to put it online, we'll never know :)

I think I'll start with making stuff that I'd like myself, and/or make pieces with specific people in mind .... then if nothing sells I've got a few bits for myself and some Xmas/birthday presents sorted for people I know :)

    I really like that.

Isn't Cornwall closely connected with the whole Arthurian thing?

PN, as to buying anything, my days of unfettered consumerism are, unfortunately, long gone. If it is more than a fiver, I will have to pass.

I have two small girls who literally came in the primark clothes they stood up in. No socks, no knickers, no jumpers, no toys. I could go on but I imagine you get the picture.

    Then there was Christmas:(

I have had a huuuuuuge parcel from Joules today (all sales stuff) which hopefully will see us through to Easter but honestly, it is really scarey how much stuff they need.

No matter how much I buy, they still need more.

Or I want them to have more. It's a moot point

I'mso happy for you that you have the evening. :) What are you going to do with the extra hours?:)

At the moment, I'm sitting on my bottom and adding things to my lakeland basket that I don't need but I presume will probably be gardening most of the summer :)

This forum/thread is really good for me. I yitter on without thinking and hey presto, I am forced to think.

I am competing with the yummy mummys. It doesn't matter that they have several years of a head start and an idiot husband, I am in competition.

The worst thing is, they didn't do it. I did.

I take the girls in the morning, one to school and one to nursery and I am watching each and every little girl. What is she wearing? How is her hair done? In what way is she outshining my princesses?

The really sad thing is, I don't think I can stop.......

    I am a lunatic

An old ''upper middle class'' school gate quip: you can tell the new money...the uniforms aren't darned, the girls have french plaits and the mothers have makeup on in the morning.

    That'd do me.

I want to have a play/improve with some cheaper stuff for my first practise batch, but I do want to end up using silver/precious.

    £40 .... that'll do nicely. Ta.

Plz thx. Just need to get "good enough" now and get it [a] made photographed [c] described [d] online.

I've spent most of today looking around at different beads etc - some exciting stuff out there.... and I've found some brilliant looking beads, which I plan to get ... tomorrow.

So scared of buying things though :(
Buying things doesn't come naturally to me.

It's easy to see how much things sell for:-

And it's free to list on lots of places that get buyers looking for handmade jewellery (see yesterday, ie etsy, folksy)

see nice silver wire and cheap beads £25
    http://www.folksy.com/items/839085-Knitted-necklace-Purple

    recycled silver shell pendant £18
    http://www.folksy.com/items/1230261-Silver-shell-pendant-Free-UK-postage

cornish sea shell necklace with string and beads £5 (on sale though)
    http://www.folksy.com/items/1073097

and you can knock up a website and add your keywords SEO optimisation and it'll be grand.

For ideas on where to get things cheaply look on the christmas board (where they craft all year for christmas )

Yeah, I have a list of UK websites to sell crafts, http://hubpages.com/hub/sites-like-etsy and I figure that I can't know which ones would work for me, so I need to get a bunch of stuff and put it on all of them. They'll all have different numbers/types of site visitors, maybe earrings will do well on one, bracelets on another; sterling on one, tat on another. Bung it on the lot and see :)

I think that first purple necklace looks a disaster... how could anybody possibly ever get it on/wear it without it catching on everything and being a nuisance!

I think that sea shell one was a good idea, but seems to be bodged when it came to the thread round the shell.

I'm going out tomorrow .... buying stuff :)
    Looking at stuff.

Oh - and re the silver shell stuff.... I know how to make those ... but generally I think they look pretty !!!!!!. I think people are picking the wrong shells to start with. Those are plain limpet-style.

I know of a secret stream where I can get some gorgeous real shells, I used to holiday on that beach when I was 14 and spent most of my time in that stream searching for those particular shells. They're pink and purple and pearlescent. So, at some future point, I might find out how to drill into proper shells.
