    I've been Money Tipped!
I loved it .... but I'm really interested in the one I'm trying to get onto on Saturday .... and, moving forward, I'm wondering if I should be looking at doing a degree in some of this stuff.

I've always actually liked the idea, just always assumed I'd be rubbish, it'd be hard, there's no money in it ..... but, as I'm not making a fortune from writing, I might as well not make a fortune from something else too. I figure I'll poke about with some ideas and see what happens.

I think there's money in the margin, so then it's just a question of the marketing and hanging a niche onto some lifestyles.... or "find the ladies who lunch" and flog it to them :)
So, I need to work towards "becoming a brand", rather than "just another person that cranks out this stuff".

I have a picture of some really really beautiful rings. Gggrrr, need to find away to send it to you. I can however link you to wear I got my wedding ring which I'm still complimented on a lot. I think, like FC, identifyability in style is important. Problem with a lot of the crafy jewellery about is it doesn't have that (or does only through a brand mark). Easy to copy and so why pay £25 for something you can get 2 for £4.99 closely enough at the market....if you are a fashionable young thing with a tight income.

I remember you like sparkly things.

I have a few loose stones I hope one day to take to the jeweller who made my wedding ring (the distinctive style, you see....it gets repeat custom).

If you want to see wedding ring let me know. I could probably text you a low quality photo to show you the other picture?

edit to remove on a friends advice :)

    But it is.

And its the one thing I have a picture of on the computer. It was emailed to me. Its horrific looking at the picture, and I'd share, but I know dear dopester would rightly tick me off for being identifiable. I don't know how to change colour of car or black out number plate or anything like that.:D

Bit OT for an OT thread but I rarely read the board immediately outside this thread because I know what I'm going to find. But sometimes I do it and it drives me nuts.

Do any of you lot read it and contribute much any more? I feel old when it starts to dawn on me that some of the posts are so ill thought out that the people posting are probably adults (as they seem to have jobs), but really immature ones.

Hopefully that means younger than me, rather than older than me and managing so far to avoid any kind of life experience that prompts empathy for other people at all.

Rant over. Sorry. You can talk about gravy and important business, and I'll go and look at a different board for a bit :o

Oh stay and talk gravy :) You know you want to really.

I fele like davesnave...but I WANT to understand those things. I actually have a stockbrokers acct unused because of the fees, but would like to have a go myself. But to do that I want to really get what I'd be doing. I kno people who've lost fortunes of multimillions more than twice and they really get it...so I know I don't want to go into it lock stock and barrel...but would with what is left over from weekly housekeeping money.

Anyway....I'm not sure you are the right person to recommend it to afterall as it's not a novel but I am just obsesssed with it...and keep suggesting it to people. It's very bite size so each chapter is only 1 or 2 pages long and easily digestible as well as being so relevant.

It would be a good one for PN...and DS, if he's around. In fact it's so good I may have to PM him if he doesn't see this post....which is likely.:o

It is the most amazing self employed 'advice' book I have ever read.

    It's called Rework
    http://37signals.com/rework/

and Amazon reviews are here Linky .

My excuse is as follows...DD decided to delete her FB as it was making her 'depressed' (in the female teen sense)...she said it made her feel like everyone in the whole world (including her zillion 'freinds' on FB) were having an amzing time and she wasn't....so she deleted it.
The problem with this is I have a brand one which, whilst it isn't full on, does need updating every few days, any customer comments to be acknowledged and so on.......so I pay her pocket money to do this for us (as I don't really log in there much)....so I have had to do it instead...and then I end up reading all this stuff that people I know have posted (on my own account) and then you get involved in messages and so on.....and it can go on for hours 0-0.

So...she then decides to sort out our Twitter account (having deemed me rubbish at it...which is true as what can you write?)...so now my inbox is over flowing with Twitter followers/to follow/not to follow and it's crazee stuff...I mean how can Justin Beibers Blog follow us when we don't follow him?? So I have pressing soshall meedja issues like what is the protocol on deleting Justin Beibers Blog...I didn't know who he was until 4 weeks ago.

Some slightly dodgy stuff following us too....what do you do???

It's all sooooo stressy *tongue in cheek* :o

Apologies in advance to anyone else news that I missed as I did the last page and then 3 pages back from here.....

I posted something not too long ago fc123 about being suprised at how few novels I read. I noticed that a fair few recent books I read were factual/reference (quite a few history books, philosophy books etc). A couple of days ago I did actually go through my unread bookshelf & noted a couple of fiction books/novels that I'd like to read in the near future.

Downside is, I've just started a Jack the Ripper splurge again (mainly owing to having had a 6 month break, but also because I got some really good books for christmas that I can't wait to devour!), but I'll move the novels etc forward so when I fancy the change, they'll be what I grab.

However your recommendation does look interesting, & has been added to my "forthcoming purchases" list. I like the fact that it appears to be a quite snappy book (chapters are relatively brief), so would be better for holding attention.

Looking at the inside if the book, I definitely think PN should read it.:)

Regarding the interweb sites, I don't have FB or twitter, & currently can't see me venturing there. A combination of reasons. Firstly, I work with young people in both jobs, & with 1 set being vulnerable, I feel it is important to maintain boundaries. Some of the young people can be "risks" as well, so without going into too much detail it is best that they know virtually nothing about you. I have an uncommon name, so would be quite easily trace-able.

People do say that you make contact with loads of people you've lost contact with. Well, I feel there's a reason you're not in contact with them any more. To be honest, there are loads of people I've known I DON'T want contact with. & if they were that important, then you'd have maintained that contact surely?

(I know there can be some exenuating circs, but in the main, if you couldn't be bothered to make the effort then, why do so now?)

I hate the way "friends" have been commodified, and we seem to value ourselves based on how many "friends" or "followers" we have.

Finally, to me they seem like a celebration of the truly banal. I mean, who gives a flying fig if you woke up with terrible hair?

I'd better stop now. I feel a red mist descending. I abhor facefook and tw4tter. Too many tweets make you a tw4t.

And the irony of sitting in isloation at a pc/phone/whatever to socialize is ridiculous!

Thanks for the recommendation fc123 - I may well request it as a birthday present this year.:)

I've never had it. I think I've seen it on a menu once, but the trouble with trying anything new is you want to "just try a bit" of somebody else's before committing. So, staring at a menu that's offering chips/gravy or chips/curry sauce or chips/mushy peas, I'm already dithering over curry sauce or mushy peas, so am not going to take a complete chance on something I've never had that might taste minging.
The trouble with this is that if you've never tasted it from a chippy, with a knowledgeable person giving it the nod, then you won't ever know if your homemade stuff is just like the shop, or if the shop one you tried was any good.

So you really need to try chips and gravy, with an expert to tell you if the one you're tasting is good or bad. THEN you can make your own at home and know if yours tastes like the 'proper stuff'.

Pastures, trust me. It is scrummy!
And, if you don't take that chance, think about all the new experiences you might be missing out on?

And that is the dichotomy. Do you go with what you know, & have a meal which you know the taste sensations are enjoyable, pleasant, & you've enjoyed before, or do you have the adventure? & try something new? Something you wouldn't normally have, but which may broaden your options in the future and increase that list of things you love?

Do it Pastures! I give you a jelly guarantee you'll love it!:D

The actual making of things really unravels the mind as well....hence that glow feeling once it's done.

I have a friend who has had a few issues recently, & is now basically struggling with a form of depression. One of the things I've been trying to impress on him is to positively use his time, and also to actually do something/make something, for exactly the reasons outlined in the above 2 posts. The sense of acheivement you personally get from completing something, as well as having productively and positively spent your time is immeasurable, and also such a boost to self confidence once the realisation kicks in that you can do something, do it well, & realise a dream (even if it is only a small one).

The self worth it can give is priceless.:)

I do post on other threads, & even start the occasional one.

Like davesnave says, I'm not convinced that I understand half of it. But I do learn from some of the genuinely helpful and knowledgeable posters on the boards. When discussing issues with friends, I become aware that I have learned quite a lot on the debate board.

Sure, I get frustrated at some of the double standards, trolling and the like. But it is a forum, & there are people like that.

It is more than balanced with the good nature I see here. For example, the last few pages of this thread - fc123 updating us all with her exploits, & the feedback she is given, reciprocated by her offering to support PN with her jewellery stuff. Or like silvercar and cleaver updating me with weather reports last month when I was due to travel (& there was lots of this - I am very grateful to them both, & other people shared details of driving conditions).

I don't go onto many other boards - I probably should more often, but timing won't allow. I read a few occasionally, but rarely post. I do always try & join in with mrbadexample's grow my own dinner thread every year, as it is fun.:D

I think a few of us do. I never contributed anything very deep to it though. Like a few of us, I ended up there in '07 trying to find out what was going on with the housing market and got hooked, especially during the financial meltdowns of '08.

I never understood half of the economics/investing stuff & probably never will. As an average sort of bloke, I decided that all the basics looked set to become more expensive, so we should own something that produces the basics; i.e. a smallholding. Now we do, I wonder whether it was a bit daft taking on all this work at my age, but what else is there....slippers? comfy chair? carpet bowls? :(

And I think it's not over yet, so the board may just get more interesting again. :)

I pretty much agree with all this Davesnave. But I'd add that you do put forward many interesting perceptions, points and examples of experiences which highlight you do know a lot of stuff.

Plus, as a bowler myself, join us! become one of us! It is great fun.:D

Thankyouverymuch :)........a cup of confidence is needed sometimes (like the lion and his cup of courage in Wizard of Oz).
Have some more from me. Like misskool of I se something that looks yours I grin. And I get outraged when I see copycats (a couple of times only...don't get out much) :)

Think you are foolish to turn down big thing because of fear....YOU are a success because of your own hard work....what can you be scared of....your success is because of your own head...not staff or stuff. While you have you you have everything.

    Seconded.

Take on an office manager - part time if necessary to get rid of the stuff and move forward.

fc123 - forget confidence, just do it. Afterwards, review, see what a success you were, & buzz off that!:) Read the above few posts - once you've done it, you'll realise how good you are...:)

    Yes!:)

We'd drifted apart, so in our conversation I was telling him al the type of things I do, & the gardening was one such thing. It gives you focus, it relaxes you, and you acheive stuff and learn stuff.

And it is a great way to deal with stress when you get home.

And it gives you something to chat about at work/with friends or on MSE:D
