How do you nick a snowman?
Why would you nick a snowman?
Is it politically correct to make a snowman, or should it be a snowperson?

Someone find me a picture of a snowperson that is not androgynous.

I tried to make a snowman today, thought it might be a more amusing way of clearing snow, from the grassy hump in the middle of my access track. By the time I had rolled the ball down hill to the public highway it should have been massive

I just could not get the powdery snow to stick together. Even tried to get it to stick to a log - I think the snow itself was well below zero even though the ground under it and the air above it bere both a fraction over zero.

So it was brush and then scatter grit (fire ash) into the wheel tracks so the car could get back up the slope again.

Anybody else heard the story that farmers are banned from helping clear country roads, because it would be illegal to do so; because the tractors are running on red diesel ?

It is only when the big freeze is over that the burst pipes will make themselves known for sure.
-6 here at 06:00 this morning, linked Pierpoint Towers to the public highway again - this is the first time I have had to do it twice in one winter and its not even Xmas yet.

Only one here, at a joint,so dh thinks it should be simple-ish repair and is messing with it now. The mains was under a good two inches of ice though..

grabbit idea: discounted access to rural icerink, over concrete not wateri.e. purpose built...ish.. Provide own skates. £5 per hour: hurry, till frosts run out.

Otherwise we're ok here I think. we were going to do some stuff out but will push that back till as late in the morning as possible because of ice on road risk.

No, but as an idea it sucks anyway. Most farmers have a farm/animals that still need tending. They have a full-time job to do on the farm.

And, how many farmers/tractors exist - and how many exist near towns - and how many are near the middle of cities.

It's just a daft idea, probably by a townie.

Yes Mr Farmer, you leave your 1000 sheep that are dying in the fields as they need hay today .... and come and clear the WHOLE of London with your 2 tractors and your Saturday boy.

Seriously? Its work though, if they require access to their turned ou stock or simply to check fields for damage or accident. If other people can get through, or need a tow on the way, thats a bonus, surely?

Last winter our big Health and safety drama was the car park servicing the town but crucially also the doctors' is on a slope and was left ungritted. The surgery was told by the council they themselves were not allowed to spread grit, nor would the council do it. This meant of course, it was lethal for the kind of people who need to go to the doctors' most often! That was when I was going all the time, I duuno, two or three times a week, and while dh was home with his broken rib,and he used to get me in safely then go out and spread grit from the provided grit bins (that we weren't meant to use).DH said he'd rather be sued for doing the right thing than be responsible by result of inaction for someone's death or serious injury. Was a thankless and painful job though. I helped him a bt when I'd finished inside, but he did it pretty much alone, with that rib. While other fit and healthy people just slipped and slid trying to walk on by.

More wishes and prayers for the monkfishes from me, and a welcome to Caroline.
I have a cold - nose, sinuses etc not too bad yet, but rapidly losing any capacity to speak audibly. This is not good timing. I am supposed to be taking the children to a Christmas party for bereaved children and their parents this afternoon, and making small talk with lots of people I don't know in a comparatively noisy atmosphere.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Yes, main dealer. Looking at a car forum, lots of people with my car are complaining of the same thing. It was water with a detergent added but no antifreeze type stuff.

There shd be a handbook or service book stating what each service requires. The PDI shd be in it.

There's no way you can thaw it out a bit - in a heated garage? Once you can get some water out of the reservoir you can put some undiluted screenwash in, and that will help to thaw the rest. It's a bit of a cludge, but a car without screenwash in this weather is well-nigh undriveable.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I've absolutely no idea what it's all about and didn't even know it was going on.... but there were some photos I looked at in another thread. Didn't connect things together.

Just saw this and made a connection: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11918873

2] LIR - hatchback, look at that shape, impractical for your home needs - look into cars that are square at the back/sides with a good rear door, there are some quite small ones these days... something that has no rear lip, that you can load animals and cargo into. I can't find any names at the moment... but there are small ones.

    Honda Jazz, Nissan Note.
