I've topped up the already full reservoir with the concentrated blue stuff. Hopefully it will dissolve the ice on contact and gradually permeate through. -3C here today.
No it won't you need to thaw the nozzles and pipes somehow - with a bit of luck the 4 - 5 degrees forecast for noon tomorrow will do it, if you are there to squirt the fluid through.I'm guessing your radiator is not your screenwash reservoir and they require different fluids.Or someone is jumping on the green bandwagon and putting a green antifreeze is a stonking big 4x4 gives you green points.
The blue stuff in the washer bottle is some sort of chemical [STRIKE]effluent[/STRIKE] by-product - in the old days everyone used meths but that is flammable if full strength.
The OAT stuff in the radiator is meant to be kinder to modern materials - for example radiators are made of aluminium these days not copper. It is also meant to last longer before it needs changing.0 -
Car > Train ticket. You can use your car from your door to any other door, at any time you wish. You can travel any route you wish - and stop to buy/load up shiny stuff.
Nobody ever nicks your seat, you can have the radio on, heater on/off, window open/closed and nobody's sticky child is smelling of poo behind you.
Car > Season ticket. Fact.
The trains here are diabolical though. If/when they exist they're slow. The branch line up the road from me's been closed due to landslips for about 3 weeks now and it was going to be another week until it was possibly open, I think we can say it'll be at least another fortnight now. And the train travels at 20mph ... to join the main line, that then travels at 30mph. I think it's 5 hours to reach London if I drive the first 20 miles and if the trains are running.0 -
good wishes to inspector monkfish.
I'm contemplating buying a car even though it's cheaper to buy a season rail ticket. Isn't that daft?
Depends....- if you are still going to be working in Town then you have parking and congestion (time more than money) to consider.
- If you alreadyhave a car in the household or not. And how reliable it is
- if one driver of said car is happy to be a designated driver or scooterman covers your area.
- parking v public transport where you live and go frequently ...or would want to go.
Last two times we went to airport...since moving, we went once by car and once by public transport ...they each had good and bad points. For dh train is easier, for me its easier in the car. That said I'd prefer the journey in a car with heating and where the window closed, let alone speed and fuel consumption.
I would buy a car if I found one I liked right now. I'd even consider leasing one I think. Thing is the ones I like aren't practical for us, and the ones that are practical in size etc aren't right on other things. A hybrid would be a bonus for my local poottling, but not on airport trips and socialising in London...though both would be more comfortable than in the LR.
It makes me feel really fussy that I can't find a car a like, bt it seems loads are very similar to each other..and few really fill gaps in between ubiquitous standard.0 -
Just whipping up some fresh mash, veggies and a big yorkshire pudding and gravy for tea. Winter food!0

BTW misskool, you really can have a dozen eggs next week if you think you'll get in to work. You don't have to cross paths with us for security, just PM me where to get them left for you....a reception desk or something. Or we could arrange a phone box and carnations in button holes,...no names mentioned but DH's puts the eggs down and you walk past and pick them up0

Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Quashqui, Hyundai Tuscan,
It doesn't need to be big,I'd prefer a coupe really, don't like convertibles (why would someone get a car that's bad for their hair and is ideal for fostering skin cancer?)but considering a hatchback too. I just prefer a longer wheelbase to height thing for long big road journeys. I really miss my little car. A hatchback ould probably be more sensible now though....could stick the big dog in the back with seats down, and dog dog sits on a front seat
I drive a quashqui thingy regularly nowadays ..my dad's and I can sincerely say I hate it. The gears are really, really funky and hard to find.0 -

A home win for the rats = both traps have been tripped and the rats got the baits - will try a bit of crackling fat for tonight.0 -

Re syphons... they are like magic. Just bought a jiggle syphon which has a non return valve. No need for a pump. You jiggle one end of the syphon into the liquid, and it builds up in the tube, until you get full flow and the full-on magic syphon action taking over to tranfer the liquid.
Without a sufficient ratio of windshield washer fluid to water in many car, come cold winter weather, the hoses, especially the one routed to the rear windscreen washer, can split with the frozen liquid, and when the weather turns milder the hose leaks water. Read loads of car forum threads of that occuring, and the water causing damage such as seizing up the rear windscreen wiper motor.
Can't comment on everything raised in this thread so far.. sorry about your bump to the head Lir. Sounds painful. Also... chainsaw people... just repeating the obvious but always safety awareness and specialised safety equipment please... they really are one of the most dangerous power tools. A guy on a tv news piece about the heavy snow was using one the other day without any safety equipment.
Chainsaws and syphons.... on the last thread I said I bought the Pictionary game for Christmas fun (ebay used), but can't believe it has taken me so long to discover isketch; an online free multiplayer, very fun online pictionary type game. No registration required. You've got to try it if you like that sort of thing. Many rooms, and max 10 people to a room. Some great drawers, and many.. not so great.0 -
I'm very wary of chainsaws ever since I was in hospital with someone else who managed to cut their arm off while using one.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
