I was interested, till I saw it had that man Ross in it. DW has banned him and, honestly, I'd rather have Janet Street Porter if it was a one-or-the-other choice.
We videoed the last (almost) total eclipse in 1999 from our back garden and we linked-up with the BBC coverage from Cornwall at the same time. We had a really old video camera, so the dire warnings they issued about pointing them at the Sun were ignored, but as there was a thin cloud or two blowing across, it survived.
Misskool, you should have been in Bury St Edmunds this morning:

I've watched both. Unfortunately I'm going to miss most/all of tonights final episode, where I believe they'll be telling you how to best view a meteor shower.
If it helps, Woss is shown in the programme as being a complete buffoon, with more money than sense. He owns 3 very expensive telescopes, but can't use them because they're too difficult, & he can't be 4rsed to learn.
So an amateur astronomer has been showing him basic stuff, such as locating key bits in the sky, how to view a planet etc. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

LJ, if you want to stop me reading in the bath you'll have to take up a watch in the bathroom.
As it happened I read it last night...in bed.And it was 99p because the third and fourth chapters appeared twice, in lieu of hat shoukd have been the fifth, sixth and seventh chapters.
TBH, the chapters I had were enough to remind me why I think therapy sucks and I'm my own best therapist.:D Chapter two was lovely though..truly American in its bittersweet, nasty-nice progression in the person. I might even have shed a tear.:o0 -
What a shame you haven't liked it lj. I've just dug my copy out, flicked through and got all excited again.
I only got 20 pages in treliac. I hadn't got into it at the time (& to be honest, was probably hankering a little for some ripper related reading) & all the views on it I heard were negative. Which is partially whuy I was so pleased to see a contrary view.
I anticipate I'll go back to it in the near future, after I've satiated my current, er, ripper reading. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Nice review.
An interesting challenge yet set me there LIR!:D I'll wait until you've sorted out the heating etc in your home before applying.

You and DH would probably be able to discuss Jack, his antics and his possible identity all night then.
He's read so many of 'em that I sometimes wonder if I'm safe to go to sleep at night.
Edit: DH suggests you might like to look at the case of Robert Mann as described in 'Quest for a Killer'; M J Trow (Pen & Sword Books 2009). Another of DH's theories is that there may have been only one intended victim and that this was 'hidden' amongst all the other victims.... possibly linked to Mary Kelly's boyfriend? Yet again there was a sailor (Dutch, he thinks) - the murders happened when he was in port and there were other killings when he was in foreign ports. He was apparently eventually arrested abroad for some other murder.
Mmmm, have you come across these theories lj?
....
Treliac I have read MJ Trows book. Apparently it contradicts quite a bit of his earlier theories (in a book I plan to buy off amazon for a 99p style purchase like LIR has done above). I think the Mann as a suspect idea is intriguing, but requires a fair bit more evidence than currently exists. There is plausibility to the idea. I don't agree with Trow that organs were removed after the bodies had been taken to mortuaries though.
There are other aspects of Trow's theory that don't fit.
The notion that there was 1 victim sounds like an allusion to the royal conspiracies (an Annie Crook had a child by the prince of wales - who it is actually believed was gay - & this child was cared for by mary jane kelly. JtR was employed by the royal household to locate this child, as annie crook was a catholic. Sir William Gull carried out the murders in the search for mary jane kelly. The other victims were friends of mary jane kelly & had been let in on the secret.)
I have to say, personally these type of conspiracy style theories are too much hogwash. Good story, little else.
The popular sailor theiry has the name Feigenbaum (sp), who was alleged to be german.
There are many who feel the sailor theory holds some water, because all the crimes were committed around weekends (early hours friday to early hours monday), with 2 of the crimes being on bank holiday weekends. Sailors used to arrive in ports in london on fridays, & leave on mondays. It also helps explain the lack of ripper activity in October (because he was away on a boat).
One problem with the feigenbaum theory is that he appears not to have existed after 1878, though of course, he could have been using aliases...
My theories change after each book I read!:D Though I do find the sheer level of detail in a statement made by George Hutchinson purporting to have seen a person with Mary Jane Kelly the night of her murder to be a little suspicious. It appears too detailed.
I am also quite torn on settling on how many victims were actually his! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Bank then started to grumble about transferring the amount on the day, saying they needed more time or a payment to do it.
I asked my dad to do the chickens, put decent clothes on and got in the car. I drove to London and went into the city to the relevant branch. They reiterated that they had got it wrong when they said they could do the same day transfer for free so I asked them how much it cost to withdraw
''Nothing at all Madam'' and how quickly does this show on my account''Instantly madam''
So I asked how much it cost to pay in...''Nothing madam, and it shows today on the account''
I smiled sweetly and said, I'd like to withdraw xxxxxxthousand please. Any notes are fine. And may I have a paying in slip?''
Suddenly they found it could all be transferred then and there on the screen for free.
Never underestimate the power of giving people the easy option
Classic! Well done lir.
The closest I ever got to something like that was when I had an extra current account where you had to fund it by a particular amount every month in order to get a high interest rate. One month I was in the middle of changing my arrangements for moving money through the account and wasn't going to qualify. The account was sitting there with nearly the maximum allowed amount of money in it, so I went to the branch, drew out a load at the cashpoint, walked inside and paid it all straight back in over the counter.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Reading you lot, writing about reading books .... I think I'm just beginning to understand why I don't read books.
I wonder if it's an Aspie thing. It just occurred to me that when I read a book I read the words. I read a page. I don't analyse it, or wonder about it. I read the words. It's like a functional activity. I sit, I read words. There's nothing else. I am not explaining it very well ... but I don't think about the characters, or motivations, etc etc or analyse anything. I read the words.
I've not described that very well.... sometimes I can't write what I mean.
So, there it is, maybe I can't "enjoy a book" the same way you lot do. And when I've read things like you lot write, I think "!!!!!!, what's this got to do with anything?" It's like you actually think about the books, or the authors, or something - all alien to me. Again, I am struggling for words here.
Also, remembering details, especially after you've got to the end. I don't do that. I read the words, I forget everything in the book. I read Chocolate about 3 years ago, I remember liking it enough to get to the end. What can I remember of it? "Woman, opens a shop, something happens, there's some old lady in it too." That is ALL I remember of a book I remember reading and enjoying.0 -
To be honest PN, it can vary book to book.
There are some books I've read where I don't think about all that stuff, until after I've finished - sometimes the bits fall into place after I've read the whole story. Atonement is an example of this - read the book, thinking "ok" each time I turned a page. Some stuff only got at the end.
I remember going to see parenthood at the cinema. A comedy. I sat through the film & didn't laugh once. However, when I got outside & went over it all with a mate, I found loads of scenes hilarious!
Is your reading of message boards and the like different to your reading of books? Do you think about the characters on here for example? Do you think about our motivations? Do you analyse posters on MB's? Genuine question, genuinely interested as I'm wondering if it is the approach to reading?
The one last important thing is that you say you read & ENJOYED Chocolate. I read to enjoy it. Yes, I will also learn (not always knowingly - sometimes I'm unaware how much info I've taken in until someone quizzes me about it & I start talking). It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
hi y'all,
just want to pick your brains......
many many people have asked us if we have ever thought about fundraising just for Daisy, rather than the charity that research her illness (www.port-charity.org.uk)
so many people have offered us donations directly, but we have always said no, give it to port.
but we are starting to realise that she is going to need many many things as she grows older, that we may not be able to afford, and NHS will not cover
(i'm already looking at house extensions, just to store all her medicines and equipment)
does anyone know much about accounting procedures and other stuff for setting up this sort of thing?
sort of things like the following:
would we have to register it as a charity?
do we not have to register it as a charity beacuse it is fundraising just for 1 person?
do we need trustees?
would be most greatful for any help or guidance
we have had a search around the internet, but its a bit of a minefield and all very confusing
tks & regards
