The next time a politician chunters on about the Dunkirk spirit or the spirit of the Blitz or whatever I will point them to this thread and tell them to take a hike.

We as a country bleat on about stuff being character building and all that but down tools at the first flake of snow and it's pretty embarrassing.

The weather here is so-so - we had a lot of snow last night but nothing completely horrendous, the roads are open, it's quite cold and damp, but this would be mild in some of the places I've lived in or been to on holiday. How some people would cope if I picked them up and dumped them in Siberia or Moscow or Warsaw or wherever I don't know, but I'd like to try it.

Rural Lincs and our postie stops at the first flake, although he makes it to his 'lady friends' house for his breakfast each morning. He told me last week he's only going to do his minimum as the PO expect him to work "til 10pm until Christmas and they can **** off" apparently.

And it's not just because of the roads - OH is an emergency plumber across Lincs/Notts/Leics and he's getting around ok, not great but ok.

So what decision-making process determines when someone can and can't work?

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound confrontational, but it might help to summarise it.

well i cant really summarise it as its covering all/most eventualities
    from mail centres/distribution/delivery
    reasons for failures etc etc
its not small decision as the sector managers are notified, then eventually it goes to the regulators(as all failures have to be)

I know, custardy, and everywhere else we have lived we've had excellent post men and women who often go above and beyond. Here, however, our postie is of the 'special' variety. He's so rude and nasty he's not even allowed to visit one of the businesses in the village, they have a different postman for their mail. How he still has a job is baffling - the man really is an enigma.

ETA Fedex made it here early evening with no problems :)

I would also assume there's a fair amount of risk assessment in it. I'm actually someone who believes H&S try to protect the public and employees (having worked in a place where rules were regularly broken, I was glad of them after a while) but that must come into it to some degree.

@Thrifty - being the daughter of an educationalist and the sister of a teacher, often schools shut because of staff living in outlying areas not able to get in rather than any problems on-site. My sister worked in Bournemouth and commuted from Southampton, so if teachers are in snowbound areas, then it almost doesn't matter that there's no snow where the school is.

These days though there's a lot you can do with distance learning, so just cos the school itself is shut doesn't mean the kids get the day off!
