or perhaps the mail didnt make it to/from the Northampton mail centre

well you've hit the nail on the head there Custardy - PLEASE don't set me off on one about them now sending all our mail to Northampton to be sorted - if I am out now when the postman comes ( anytime between 11.30am - 4.30pm) and I miss a signed for or parcel - i now have a card which says leave 48 hours before going to collect from local office !!
the best one was a special delivery that arrived after 1pm on a friday - and the card left said leave 72 hours before collecting !!!!

my posty says he doesn't even bother going into sort his mail now until 7.30 as thats the earliest the mail arrives at Coventry - my franked mail bags take days to get back to me ( had 18 returned today!) and thinks have gone from dire to farcical really.

But thats another story altogether !!! :D

what you mean is the start time is 0730?
the same is coming to all delivery offices
the reason cards state 48 to 72 hours is staff dont return to the office
so items go back through the system
so given the weather, lack of collections etc i assume they have made it 72 hours
most items are usually back next day but its better to put 48 if you dont know it will be

Not sure if his official start time is 7.30 - he said he used to go in for 6.15 to start sorting his round - but now there is no point because there's nothing there to sort as the post doesn't arrive from Northampton until 7.15-7.30am

I understand about the items going back to Northampton - this 72 hours was well before the bad weather started - about 3 weeks ago when the weather was lovely and sunny.

I am thinking of asking him to leave any parcels or items for me at the local post office now-sometimes 48 hours is too long to wait for an item - how I long for the good old days when the posty used to come at 8am - every day!

he cant leave items at the local PO
you need to organise that with the delivery office for each item you get
its £1.50 per item pid at the PO
the 48/72 hours thing isnt new
the system of pouching off has been in place since the drop of the 2 delivery system
but as deliveries get later, the items get collected later, get to the mail centres later etc etc

Ive been warning for ages what was coming.i remember when folks couldnt understand those lazy posties up in arms about the later starts
    well heres the result

We've not see a postman round here either today so it's not just you.

We've had no post since Friday and don't expect any till our snow has gone. The only way out of my part of the village is on foot and then its hard going as it over my knees deep, practically up to my bum  in places.

Oh I didn't realise that you had to pay for collecting items at the PO
perhaps I'll ask him to leave them with my neighbour !
my posty says he would much rather be out delivering earlier in the day as he needs to arrange child care now to pick his children up from school- whereas before he could finish in plenty of time
I get on really well with my posty - he is very vigilant and even when people have mis-addressed mail to me, he brings it to the right door - I was sorry he didn't make it out yesterday as I had some advent calendars for his children - still I'll catch him tomorrow now!

all the posties want to get out and get the day over
however thats not what RM want
I remember just 4 years ago being out on delivery at 7am on delivery
i used to be able to meet the parents dropping their jkids at the school and hand over their packets
    all done nice and early
now you are lucky to be on the street before 10.30am,and its going to get later

I dont live that far from Bury, and right now the snow here is nearly two inches deep and climbing, I have no doubt in my mind this is going to affect delivery vehicles, just as it has already with public transport and even private vehicles.

If its an excuse, its a damn good one and as far as I can tell from my window, a perfectly valid one.

I would love to get in the car and drive the 1 mile to the major stores for xmas shopping, but am not going to risk the journey with all this snow on these as yet "still" un-gritted roads. My only credit goes to the Postman, who throughout this difficult period, still manages to deliver the mail.

It's worse today than it was yesterday and i'd have understood it more if they were coming today. I drove into the town centre earlier to do some stuff and the roads off the main ones are awful to drive on, I practically slid all the way to our house off the main road so I won't be going out again until it clear a bit.

Funnily enough though my mum had a carpet fitted today from the same place we had it done from and everything was on time and the store opened up as normal, which leads me more to think that whoever was opening up just couldn't be bothered getting out of a nice warm bed yesterday as like I said the snow was worse today.

  • Custardy it's pointless trying to defend posties.
It's ok if a bus driver/council worker or office worker has a day off to go sledging but the world ceases to function if the mail comes half an hour late.

  • I think he was just doing business post but here's a pic of our postie from this morning

Would have understood if he'd not done deliveries today!

Was annoyed with the post office being shut yesterday afternoon though. They were the only place to close despite being bigger than a lot of the shops up here and the snow really wasn't that bad as most of it fell overnight. Apparently one further away has staff who are more dedicated and even opened today though so it's not all of them.
