Why should public sector be better off?

Surprised? No, because they are bound, body and soul, to the organisation. That's never healthy.
I think that is more down to misplaced envy on the part of others!0 -

I really don't see why this is the case though.
Besides, if the public sector was all that great then surely the people complaining of such would just move into a public sector job?0 -
the public sector dont need to make a profit, they are a service only. but that also means they have no motivation, cue the crapness of all public sector staff. got to love their golden pensions tho....Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)
new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,0000 -

Bingo.
(see also "if you're sure the social pays so well why on earth are you still in that demanding job you keep b*llocking on about?")Oh come on, don't be silly.
It's the internet - it's not real!0 -
Just for info, Police Officers can retire after 30 years service because they pay a lot more into their pensions-a MINIMUM of 11% of their salary.
I've been a local authority employee for almost 20 years and think I must have been looking in all the wrong places for the perks because I sure as hell haven't had any!
I'd also like to point out that local authority staff are NOT civil servants-they have a non contributory pension (so far) but local authority certainly don't0 -
Get this, I work in the public sector and am trying to get a job in the private sector! This is because I don't get paid enough and there are no jobs going here. I rely on sharing my boyfriend's wages and sometimes I have to accept handouts from my parents too. It's embarassing and particularly upsetting now my dad is retired and having to manage his finances carefully.
And get this! Dad worked in the public sector too for 40 years, and got little pay back despite the fact he never took sick leave and worked late every Christmas Eve managing the office and taking phone calls whilst everyone else went home. Oh, and he always took his work home and continued working in the evenings. When I was a kid I thought this was normal, and that all adults got home work every evening. He worked very hard all his life, and even when he was made to retire early to save some cash, he STILL praises them as an employer.
Sure, higher management generally do pretty nicely, but the rest of us mere mortals have to work hard for little pay and little recognition for what we do- and just to make things that little bit worse we constantly have to deal with people like the OP. A sizable chunk of my pitiful wages goes towards my pension, and when I retire I will have damn well earned it.0 -
Nan wasn't motivated or interested enough to improve her lot in life while she was younger then? Plenty of courses/training/education to access, which in turn might have led to a better job/salary and more comfortable retirement.
No, just whinge and blame everyone else - it's easier.0 -
OP, face up, unfortunately your Nan has spent her life lazing around in crappy jobs, not bothering to put anything by, not bothering to aspire to better.
Or possibly not lazy as such, maybe just a bit too thick to do any better? A bit too selfindulgent to plan ahead? Bit too bitter and twisted to take responsibility for herself, preferring to bitch about others, blame them for her shortcomings?
Your only shred of comfort here in having such an utter loser in the family is the hope that these traits are not hereditary....

You sound quite self-satisfied, Slagalot. One day, the wheel will come full circle and you will find yourself on the ground looking up. You may never know what she feels like until it does. I am astonished by your cruel words - she is an old lady for God's sake!0
