Stolen iPhone - no insurance please help!

Just a bit of a point regarding the find my iphone feature....
It doesn't work if the phone is blocked as it needs the sim card to be active to track it in order to send the location.
Unfortunately, calling to bar the phone straight away was the worst thing to do from a 'find the handset' perspective, but the best thing from a 'how much were all those international calls?' point.0
