Stolen iPhone - no insurance please help!

Hi all,

I received at the start of August an unlocked iPhone 4 from a close family member bought at our local Apple Store.

Last week, during a late night coming home I was sleeping on the train and I believe somebody took the phone from my coat pocket.

Unfortunately the 'FindMyiPhone' feature wielded no results just saying 'Location unavailable' and what's even worse is that I didn't pay any extra for phone insurance and I don't pay for house insurance..

I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what to do next? I'm waiting till the middle of next week to see if it turns up in national rail's lost property but am not feeling very hopeful.

One idea I had was seeing if we can claim the theft under my family member's house insurance? If so any idea how much this will add to their premium as obviously I would be sure to cover the increase.

Another point of note is that the phone was originally bought using an HSBC Premier credit card, does anyone know if this card covers for thefts or anything like that?

Sorry for not keeping this message very concise, am just wanting to somehow make the theft seem a little bit more bearable :(

Thanks,
Oli

  • Can't offer any advise about your insurance, but if you haven't already call up and get your phone barred, if you don't you'll be liable for any calls made on your phone and bills in the hundreds in these situations aren't unusual.

Thanks, I did that about 10 minutes after I woke up without a phone so luckily no extra bills.
  • Have you reported it to the Police yet?

Yep unfortunately they seemed pretty passive. They said they'd let me know if anyone handed it into a police station - something I would assume is very unlikely.

When you say you dont pay house insurance does this mean you dont live with the family that you suggest claiming against their insurance.

Big no no if you dont live with them. Big fraud, big sentence, no more insurance for them or you, or at the very least yu and them would find it difficult to get any insurance.

Looks like yu will have to suck this one up and chalk it up to experience
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks for clarifying this, I thought it was a pretty long shot. Looks like it just means an early £500 out of my Xmas budget then!

Hope it turns up OP. You never know,

    Karma rules, do nice things,

(and next time keep your phone in a zipped inside pocket)

Or buying a cheap Nokia, asking the network to give you a normal sized sim, and save the money instead????

Yep I am considering getting a cheaper phone. Basically my work requires instant access to e-mails and internet so probably can't get away with a super cheap one but I am definitely considering all options.

I just really enjoyed using the iPhone, it's only now that I realise how much I used it: (Sat Nav, iPod walking to work, bluetooth music in car, e-mails on train, keeping up to date with news, working out tube and train times / routes, controlling music system at home, camera).

I think whatever happens, I'll be getting insurance before getting a phone.

What's annoying is that I went into Barclays a few months ago to open one of their accounts with free phone insurance but their systems weren't working so I just stayed with my current account - very annoying
