Thank you all - full of food and feel a bit better.
I've thought about it and I'm going to complain and consult the things you've mentioned and the link - thank you Z - I got the name of the girl who was rude - and I've looked at my income - and if they want to be silly - I can easily argue that my new income or lack of it means that I've not much more than £5 a month to put to their debt - they won't get it quickly then will they?
Its been one thing after another with this lot.Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:

Oh pippi
You are NOT an idiot - I can't believe how much they've messed up! I'm so cross on your behalf!
I reckon putting in a complaint is a good plan. As is threatening to pay only £5 a month
Also, if they won't accept it - what were you going to do with the money before you decided to pay this off? Perhaps you should go back to that original plan?
Back when my fingers feel less like icicles and I can type quicker!xx

It's not really a case of being silly, and you don't have to convince them to honour their offer. They made you an offer, which you accepted. They then turn around after the event and try to change the details of that offer. Looks like a classic "bait and switch" to me.
I'm sure a regulator (assuming they have some sense - not guaranteed) would see it the same way."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
"We were born and raised in a summer haze." Adele 'Someone like you.'

DEFINATELY not an idiot. Its just the stupid type of thing banks do. OH got sent a letter saying ring us and we can offer you a discounted amount to clear your debt, OH rang them and the woman said and I quote "Oh there isnt really an offer its just what we write and say so you ring us" !!!!!!!

Unbelievable - what an unbelievably cruel, spiteful thing to do. Pippi I am screaming along with you here - SO angry on your behalf. (And your OH too Pips Mum) I wonder whether they neded to claw some money in quickly...sent out those letters to a large number of people...have now got the money they needed in and would in fact have told you it was an error even had you rung them immediately you got the letter, which of course you couldn't as you first needed to give it the consideration that such a major financial committment justified to make sure that you were doing the right thing for your and your family.
As the others have said, definately one to complain about, and shift any thoughts of being an idiot or foolish in any way - you are NOT, you did exactly the right thing, it's the person who sanctioned signing a letter which it seems was nothing more than a taunt who should be truly, truly ashamed of themselves.
Complain. Complain. And complain again. Consider letting Martin know about this as well as I can see him being hugely annoyed at the idea of this company carrying out such appalling acts towards those who, as a result of being in debt, many through no fault of their own, are incredibly vulnerable.
And, remember, if it makes you feel better, you can always say

Quite right EH :T :T
I too can only assume they sent the letters knowing people would get all excited about paying it off, ring up, be told it was more, and pay it all off  I'm sure Martin would have several things to say about it!

Still angry.

Only just popped in and caught the bad news. Pippi why are you angry at yourself? All you have done is take at face value what appeared to be a reasonable offer. THEY have then wriggled back out of it. It's not your fault AT ALL!! If they knew it was a typo they should then have written again to you to explain. As it stands you have the offer which you were given in writing, as far as I understand this constitutes a contract and you would be within your rights to demand that they stick to it. I would definitely seek advice - is there a CAB anywhere around there, or anyone else who might be able to shed more light on it?
In the meantime, take a step back, a few deep breaths, and try to get things back into perspective. You have not lost anything, you still have the money you've saved and you are in just the same position you were before only with extra savings. Try and do something nice to take your mind off it and get back on the case tomorrow. ((((hugs))))0
