    Hi Pippi! <waves madly>

Ellesmere Port KC :D Home of Vauxhall, ICI, Shell, and apparently the worst air in the country :rotfl:

I beg to differ, Widnes has the worst air in the country!!! ICI, Granox lots of chemical factories.

Mind you I did got to Ellesmere Port a lot and it did stink there too.

  • And waves to cheery! Fun conversations here tonight about why we can't grow things normally here (like beans outside, etc)!

Beginning to actually enjoy teaching, missing granny - so keep booting myself up backside :)

Be nr your neck woods late next week for funeral.

She specifically said no black as it shows up dog/cat hairs!! Lol, practical til the end.

    What a gal!

Jock the cockerel now in nice new home :)

Pippi - re compost...you must have a limited choice up there though!

I know I have "fun" when I'm at Dad's and trying to avoid H***base! Though big stores can have a faster turnover, so the compost if fresher. I am forever going to the garden centre in Castletown when it is closed, so end up at H***base after all!!!

I have been using JI compost for quite a few years now...try to get J Arthur Bowers ones as I like the texture. I have Westland this time...not overly happy about that, but it is much better than it was years ago. Also got the bags half-price as all the bags split when the went into the trolley! Someone wasn't very good at sealing that batch!! I also like to warm the compost for a day or two if I am sowing indoors...so have a tub or bag of compost in the conservatory over the spot where the radiator pipe must be near the surface as the floor is quite warm!! I put the compost in the trays for at least one day with the propagator on, again to get it evenly warm...certainly seems to have done the trick this time! I have also given up covering the chilli and tomato seed trays so they can germinate in the dark, doesn't seem to make any difference! :D

I agree about the water...I sometimes even use boiled filtered water. This is certainly a time where you don't use rain water!!

I tend to use Stardrops to clean my pots and give a final rinse in water with a splash of cheap bleach in...seems to work pretty well!

How was your gardening class tonight, how many folk do you get?
Do you go into a garden for the practicals, or do you take in loads of seeds and compost?

Right, really must do some stitiching before bed!!

Apologes for all the wittering...but I do like talking gardening/sowing!!

    Night. night all....again! :rotfl:

Thanks Keiss and Pippi for the seed advice. The funny thing is that I was trying to be more careful than usual re washing pots etc, the compost I bought a few weeks ago and it's the New Horizon general purpose stuff. I sowed broad beans, sweet peas, sprouts, and leeks, then chillies and mixed salad in a heated propagator. I only have a one-tray-size heated propagator (and that came out of a skip :rotfl:). This house has limited space for growing things - the available places are mostly either too dark or too cold or both. These ones are all in our back porch, which is light as it has windows all round and a polycarbonate roof, but it's bitterly cold. The beans suffered badly before I noticed and almost half of them haven't come up (normally they are practically guaranteed to come up). The others I did notice, so as soon as I saw a sign I uncovered them and that seemed to help, there are signs of life in the leeks and sprouts too so perhaps I was quick enough. Even the trays that are heated have a hint of grey fluffyness about them though, which I didn't expect.

    Fingers crossed anyway!
Glad the teaching is going well Pippi.

Now I'm debating with myself whether I can construct chicken accommodation by the end of the month - and whether it would be a good idea.

Trog - just sounds like you've been unlucky - re the hens - do it do it do it do it do it do it!!!!How many are you thinking of? They don't need much of a construction - wish I was nearer so I can help - any help I can be please PM me. OH I'm so excited for you!

Keiss we have lots of choice for compost here but the price is OMG due to carriage - I was looking yesterday - ouch!!!!! Hope you got some 'sewing' done!

KK - good idea - think DD is coming with me.

Re garden class this one is about 24 folk - normally its smaller. We do half indoors about the growing techniques etc and half out there getting muddy. I take a whole manner of stuff into the class - which is why of course I need so many seeds. :)
