I think it boils down to, you get what you pay for.

I used to be with Tiscali, and I must admit they went from reasonable to truly awful. Am with PlusNet now - quite happy, 2mb download (usually), 3gb a month, £14.99 a month. Did have a problem soon after I started with them, CS was reasonable. Was a BT problem, who came out and solved the problem by running me a dedicated ADSL line to the computer - for free ! Well done BT.
It does annoy me somewhat, when I see people complaining about PlusNet (and other ISPs), because they aren't getting 8mb, and they can't download their 30gb of movies, music or whatever, a day - for £14.99 a month or less !

If you want a Rolls Royce, sorry, you'll have to pay for it !

    Hi
If isps advertise upto 8mbs and a download cap, then surely this is what people expect. Of course MAX is adaptive and not a fixed line, and there are lots of reasons why people can't MAX, but for the download cap, if an isp advertises 50gb per mth, for xx£'s and people download their 50gb, then why not, and why should these ips's complain if their users and doing this.
I personally would rather have a smaller download cap then traffic shape/throttling which a lot of isps are doing now, this just causes resentment/anger when they do this without any prior warning to their customers and a lot of isps even deny it for mths afterwards, like Nidram for example.

But that's just my opinion

I used to get 4MBits/sec on my "max" connection, and now it's 3. I bet it's everyone else with broadband causing crosstalk and degrading each other's signals. After all, the telephone system was designed for speech, not frequencies into the MHz region.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

I agree with what you say, particularly about the "up to 8mb" racket and the cavalier attitude of some of the ISPs. But unfortunately many people don't read the small print, or don't understand it, and with human nature being what it is some people will try and and get everything they can, which does have a detrimental effect on others. I am not talking about people who download 50gb a month, I am talking about people who think that they should be able to download that in a day (for their £14.99 !) - then gripe when their ISP throttles it.

As I said, I am happy with my 2mb and 3gb service, as are the vast majority of users. Why should our reasonable desires/needs be mucked about by a minority of people who are almost using the web for "industrial" purposes ?
Gas and electricity users don't pay a flat fee then use as much as they want, if they did, you would have exactly the same problem with them. Dare I say the same thing is happening on our roads ?

The problem is that the telecomms system was not built for the internet and to be blunt, it is struggling to cope at the moment. It will catch up one day, but someone has to pay for that - and that is something that is being ignored at the moment.

I was with Pipex a few years ago and had lots of problems.

I moved to Freedom2surf and it was exellent.

Last year Pipex bought Freedom2Surf and things have gone down hill again!

I am looking to move away from these people very quickly!

Same for me - escaped Pipex and went to Freedom2Surf, only for Pipex to buy them and bring their incompetance and constant line dropping with them.

I have requested a MAC key and will be moving to Be Unlimited now they are in my area.
