http://www.stanstedexpress.com/ I checked the Stansted Express and it seems the single price to Tottenham Hale is £16.70 whether you book for today or 1 month in the future. So I take it that's the set walk on price? Or is it?

Then the next journey from Tottenham Hale to Euston is coming up as £4 (and I take it that's also a price that will be the same on the day?). So if my maths is correct that's £20.70 from Stansted to Euston. YET, if I try and book this as one ticket it shows £22.80.

Isn't it supposed to be cheaper to book it 'together'? Or am I missing something here??

So now all I have to worry about is a ticket from T.Hale to Euston. Will this be a tube journey?

Yep a tube journey. Buy the ticket at TH from the machine or the ticket office.

There are ways of getting it cheaper than £4 (Oyster card from £2.40) but for a one off may not be worth the bother.

It should be but the through fare assumes you travel via Liverpool Street.

My prices are from the First Great Western site - obviously I'm guessing as to date so it might not work out fior you. But the Euston to X availability ought to be the same whether it's a standalone journey or part of a longer one where the other bit is not quota controlled. Ought to maybe doesn't mean it is - but on the date I checked 'ought' worked out for Manchester

The tube fare will be £4

It's not the actual travel time that's the issue - it's whether your plane is on time and how long it takes you to get out of the airport and whether there are any delays en route. Having no hold luggage may not be an issue - on many flights by the time you've got through immigration your luggage is there waiting for you.

Ah yeah, I forgot. It's been so long since I flew back to a London airport that I kind of forgot they are some of the worst in the World for wait times.
I'm going to allow myself 3 hours, which should be doable. If not then I guess I've just been unlucky. As at the end of the day, if I allow myself 4-5 hours it just means that I'll probably end up waiting around in the freezing cold somewhere for a few hours and it will also defeat the purpose of taking this route in the first place (avoiding a 4 hour wait that I would have had at another location). Oh the perils of travel in the modern World. It's not the good old 1800's any more.

Okay, but it's better (and faster) to change at Tottenham Hale right?

I'm gonna go for it soon, and book my advance single (before the price goes up). I take it you can't buy advance singles for the stansted express, and that the £16.70 price to Tottenham is the normal walk on price?

Yes Tottenham Hale is better as long as the Victoria Line is runing normally. There are no engineering works planned that date so it should be.

The £16.70 price is a £1 saving on the walkon price and is only available on the Stansted Express site. It's not train specific and it won't sell out. I don't know what the booking deadline is.

If I book online can you pick up tickets for the stansted express from 'fast ticket machines', at the aiport station?

    From the Stansted Express website:

Tickets can be collected from the Stansted Express ticket machines located at Stansted Airport, Tottenham Hale and London Liverpool Street 3 hours after the booking has been made and up to 30 days after the date selected for travel. This gives you additional flexibility should your travel plans change.

Express Class & First Class Single

Single tickets are valid for one journey on the day the ticket is collected from the ticket machine.

Express Class & First Class Return

Return tickets are valid for 30 days from the date of outward travel. The outward journey must be made on the day the ticket is collected from the ticket machine.

Please ensure tickets are not collected prior to the intended day of travel.

I am surprised that no-one has advised you to buy a ticket from Audley End rather than Stansted. Audley End to Tottenham Hale is £13-60 for an Anytime ticket routing "any permitted" - one of the permitted routes being via Stansted Airport. This was suggested to me on another forum RailUKforum and indeed works fine - I used it only last month on Stansted Express without any problem!

Tottenham Hale to Euston is 5 stops (approx 15-20 mins) the cash fare being £4 (as has been said before if you have an Oyster it is only £2-70/2-40 peak/offpeak).

    Hope that this is helpful.

It is technically invalid to buy a ticket for a longer journey than you actually make, although you can often get away with it. The OP can book at advanced single ticket for trains leaving Stansted via Tottenham Hale and Euston up to 15.15 for £28. That's what I would do allowing about two hours in case the plane is delayed. If you have decent travel insurance you can claim the cost of buying an extra rail ticket if your flight is delayed, but only if you have allowed yourself a reasonable margin to make the connection.
