Where is your final destination? Could you use a route that takes you direct from Gatwick up to Bedford?

I really don't think 2 hours is long enough. Gatwick is not the easiest airport to get through, if you arrive late on a Saturday evening it may be empty, if you arrive at 0700 in the morning, any morning, you are likley to take an hour just to get though the airport, assuming your luggage is delivered to the conveyors at a reasonable speed. I live in North London so the Thameslink service is the answer, direct to St Pancras, although you need to allow a good 15 minutes to walk to Euston. Just another thought, Thameslink is usually closed every weekend so may not be an option at all. If not, then its at least 30 minutes to Victoria and then you have to hope the Victoria Line is working, it also has maintenance closures some weekends, you can check at www.tfl.gov.uk in advance. Also remember you need to factor the fact that you may have to wait 15 minutes at Gatwick Airport for a train, added together I would look to book another later cheap ticket on Virgin trains, if you don't and you miss it, 'walk on' fares will scare the living daylights out of you
  • For reasons of speed you will for sure want to get a Travelcard from Gatwick and possibly use the Victoria line. Once you get out of the airport you will be at Euston within the hour so I think just under 2 is ample, it has never taken me even close to an hour to clear Gatwick.

However you shouldn't need to use the Gatwick Express really as the difference in journey time is only about 5 mins vs the normal Southern service.

The FCC is arguably more convenient but it can take bloody ages to get through the Blackfriars-Farringdon corridor so I would avoid getting it all the way to St Pancras

However, a slightly different option is to get the FCC as far as London Bridge and switch to the Northern line there to Euston, it's a very easy change. Journey planners reckon the time to be identical to the Victoria route so I would keep this under consideration too.

Hi. Thanks for all the replies.

I'm actually also considering if Stanstead airport might be a better option, especially since the easyjet flight price just went up another £10. Again I'll have 2 hours (or I could get a train 1 hour later - making it 3 hours) to get from there to Euston. Is it possible? Is there a train or bus that runs from there? I won't have hold luggage, so that should speed things up a bit.
I'll be travelling around 11.30am on a Saturday if that makes any difference.
Destination could be anywhere in the area of Manchester/Preston/Lancs, as I've seen there are several different routes up that way, but still think I'll need to get to Euston.

    Thanks again.

At a weekend you need to check up on engineering work/bus replacement. That might make your timescales impossible.

The travel time to Euston from Stansted is virtually the same as from Gatwick. The fare is getting on for twice as much with few opportunities for discount.

2 hours is pushing it, as with Gatwick. 3 is more reasonable. I'd be happier with 4.

You can buy an advance single from Stansted to Manchester, and loads of other Virgin stations, via London, at very little more than the fare just to London. As you can from Gatwick. Why faff about with separate tickets??

Hi. I checked the virgin site and the cost for a 'direct' ticket is £86.50. I'm fairly sure that's far more than I would pay to buy 3 separate tickets. Where are you getting your prices from?

At the moment I'm thinking it's about £16-£18 Stansted to Tottenham Hale (I think this is the usual walk on price no?.
Tottenham Hale to Euston (no idea???? - but seriously it can't be above £40, surely?)
    Euston - Lancs £26.50 (advance).

I wish there was a site where I could work all this out, with the durations, as I'm only guessing at the moment. Hell, if I can't get from Stansted to Euston in 2-3 hours we're living in the 4th World of transport. I'd like to hear from anybody who managed to make this epic journey...........and survived. Thanks.

You can get there in time if the plane is punctual, but if it is an hour late you're stuffed. Advanced ticket prices on Saturdays from Stansted or Gatwick are often £28. What date are you travelling?

My prices are from the First Great Western site - obviously I'm guessing as to date so it might not work out fior you. But the Euston to X availability ought to be the same whether it's a standalone journey or part of a longer one where the other bit is not quota controlled. Ought to maybe doesn't mean it is - but on the date I checked 'ought' worked out for Manchester

The tube fare will be £4

It's not the actual travel time that's the issue - it's whether your plane is on time and how long it takes you to get out of the airport and whether there are any delays en route. Having no hold luggage may not be an issue - on many flights by the time you've got through immigration your luggage is there waiting for you.
