What to use as Hamper boxes?

Hiya

I am inspired to make some Hampers after reading some of the great threads -but I can only find pricey baskets to use for the actual Hamper - what are you all using to keep it MSE?

For my grandad, we always decorated a sturdy cardboard box with xmas paper and lined the inside with a new teatowel

You can get wicker-type baskets in many discount stores in various shapes and sizes for around £3-£5
You could also buy a wicker style bin, chuck a ribbon around it, fill with various bits and pieces and when they've used them up they can use the bin to chuck away the slightly less useful xmas pressies.

Thanks - I was just wondering of anyone has found baskets, etc for £1 as when you have a £15 budget its a shame to let £5 of that go on a basket.

I've picked up a few at Wilkinsons for about 50p each (strongly reduced - think they were intended summer stock for maybe point less decoration but they look pretty and will make great little hampers) but other than that try pound shops, carboots, ebay and any cheapie shops round you

It all depends on the size you need really I guess I'll try to post some pics of a finished one if I get round to it tonight although there are some really good pics about from one of the other enthusiastic hamper makers on this thread

Worth looking in the fruit & veg sections of supermarkets to see if they get anything delivered in old fashioned wooden crates. These make great hamper bases.

I bought my basket on ebay earlyer this summer. Got five baskets for 5 pound incl. p&p.
The inside got blue/white gingham fabric so I have just altered the inside depending on what I'm putting in the basket and who its for. I used leftover Christmas fabric, red/green tissue paper, purple face cloth (for a purple pampering basket) etc....

i'm just decorating boxes with wrapping paper, and filling them with shredded paper

We're baking for our hampers, so need smaller containers, so we're saving plastic food trays (the sort of things you get ready meals, or pre-packed chill products in) - cover with foil, add a little decoration, and then wrap in clingfilm to hold the food in.

For the larger hampers, what about plant pots/tubs? We have a couple of larger hampers to make up, so they're going in the dish-shaped pots, along with a pack of bulbs for the spring. Cost £1.99 for a tub, whereas a basket the same size would be £5+. The garden centre we're getting them from also had terracotta coloured plastic trugs for the same price.

I got 2 wicker baskets in tesco with cream lining for £3.98 there were also plastic square baskets for 47p not the cheapest but nice all the same.

Right I am back now, Au naturel wasnt too bad, but baskets were expencive, although I did get a nice faux suede effect box for £1.50. Some gift boxes were BOGOF.

Also for little girls, check out the bang on the door books, down from £1.50 to 45p.

Anywas back to baskets, we then went across to instore (maybe still called poundstrecher when you are) and they had some great baskets, just the right size really cheap.

This one is bigger than it looks on the pic, and it only £1.50 very pretty. Also available in whitewash for £2

This one is not much bigger, but looks very expensive in the flesh and has a gorgeous colour.

This one is my fave, and the one I am getting, its the biggest out of the 3, also has a nice lid on it so you can prop everything up against it to present the gifts. This one is £3.

All the baskets come in different sizes, I have just shown you the cheapest of the lot.
