Hmmm... I'm beginning to wonder if you're one of these people who post on message boards just to wind people up.
Anyway -tr3mor wrote:Renewable energy in the UK provides 4.22% of the total at present (restats.org.uk). Presuming consumption is fairly similar then that is enough to provide about 50% of Norway's power. Considering the UK is less than two thirds the size of Norway, 20 times as densley populated and doesn't have as good a landscape for generating power, I think we're not doing too badly!
Well, whoopee-doo! You'll just have to excuse me for not leaping with excitement! Don't get me wrong, it's a start, and baby steps are better than standing still. I was just trying to highlight the fact that these countries have natural resoruces, and they take advantage of those. Have you for example any idea how much outcry there was in Norway every time a river was going to be "dammed" to make them drive the turbines? It would probably be similar to the wind farm opposition movement when they say that wind farms will ruin the landscape. So what I was saying was that Norwegians moaned like hell when these rivers were "dammed" saying it would ruin the countryside, but Norway's power is still mainly generated in this way. And here in the UK, the countryside folk moan like hell everytime someone wants to put up a wind farm, making it nigh on impossible for them to be built. IOW, the UK could have loads more of its power generated by wind and wave power if these people would just realise that if they keep opposing these measures, they won't have a countryside to protect if the global warming continues - their beautiful countryside would probably be under water!tr3mor wrote:Honestly, there's barely anyone living outside of the cities in these countries to be a NIMBY!
Cough, cough! You just started barking up the wrong tree! I would argue that you might even be in the wrong part of the woods! As I am Norwegian I could take serious offence (but I won't, because I haven't got anywhere to put it :rotfl: )
The population density type or demographics (whatever it's called) in Norway is not that different to the UK. The major part of the population live in the big cities, and the rest live in suburban areas, towns, villages and rural areas. I think you'll find that things look pretty much the same. And believe me (I know this for a fact) that a major part of the Norwegian population is made up of complete NIMBYs!
So to summarise my point:
If Iceland and Norway (and the like) can make use of their natural resources (despite public opposition), why can't the UK? We have the resources to produce so much more of our power from renewable sources, but there's not a matching amount of will to do so.0 -
I rarely see things made in Japan, Iceland or Norway and I always try to buy British so I am happy enough not to buy from them"Well, we are a Christian country, it is an important part of our make-up and I don't see any reason to change." David Cameron0

It's the poor s*d on the production line at the factory who probably can't afford to have a cut in wages. But who cares about them?
And when enough people lose their jobs they will start to revolt.
Thus (hopefully) bringing about a change in government.
This means the working man can earn his living AND whaling gets stopped. Why not lobby the relevant embassy or head of state? Why have a go at the poorest in these countries?
Because lobbying is about as much use as urinating into the wind.
Don't get me wrong, it has it's place. But that place is alongside direct action and boycotts
I agree completely with what you say about the petit-bourgeois, but then again the internet is the playground of the middle classes - where they can spout off about 'chav scum' and other drivel.
Hopefully lots of people will boycott the uk, then we can have a revolution of our own and get rid of them.. ;>ॐ Signature Removed by Someones Mum. ॐ0 -

Yeah and we'll all live together in some sort of communist utopia.
When enough people lose their jobs, they will starve, freeze and generally not have enough energy to revolt - I'm guessing that you've not been to Iceland or Finland have you? 'Revolt'? For crying out loud. What planet are we all on here?
If only a few whales could read this thread, they'd be throwing themselves into the way of harpoons just to get away from all the madness! And I wouldn't blame them.
I'm actually on the whales' side but a reality check so that we don't just hurt people for the sake of making ourselves feel better might be a good idea.
Boycotts and revolts? Hands up everyone who isn't currently involved in a Student Union!

I would ask people to avoid going off topic here onto irrelevant matters such as renewable energy.
I view my chosen way, namely of boycotting goods from countries which engage in this barbaric 'tradition', as totally legitimate and, in the end, probably far more successful than any pious statements from irrelevant, fringe organisations.
I acknowledge completely the fact that numbers are critical here but I'm quite happy to make this my personal statement if nobody else shows interest. It's something I can do and I intend to do it. If others do likewise in large numbers, so much the better.
Now then, all I need now is for someone to supply a list of Icelandic/Norwegian goods which I can stick on my kitchen noticeboard. I think I'm reasonably well up on the Japanese labels.
Anyone able to help on that front? Does anyone happen to know whether Ikea stuff, for example, is sourced from Norway in any quantity..?0 -

It is entirely unethical to take actions which will have a negative effect on the most vulnerable in society.
If anyone can find such a list, post it and I'll go out of my way to buy from it to help those who, through not fault of their own, would otherwise lose their jobs.
