I've done some research and found that Primus also installs lines - so you DON'T have to use BT at all. That is a fantastic news for me as I wanted to avoid going with BT to start with - I had a lot of problems with these guys in the past, but didn't know that there's an alternative.
I'm afraid your research is flawed because, regardless of who you choose to pay to install the line, it'll be part of the same PSTN network and only BT Openreach are allowed to work on it - so you'll still have the same lack of installed equipment problem and the same engineers eventually doing the work.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Avoid NewCallTelecom/Primus

    1. there are cheaper alternatives
    2. there are much better customer focussed companies

Primus/NewCall have been found guilty of failing customers by the regulator Otelo, and even refuse to respond to communication and the decisions of the Ombudsman, so rest assured they are not interested in little fish like small customers.

The call centres are offshore and they will talk over you, never call back as promised, refuse you to speak to a manager, fail to bill you correctly etc etc

Despite giving a glasgow address, there i no-one in the UK they will let you speak to.

THEY ARE A COMMUNICATIONS COMPANY THAT CANNOT COMMUNICATE, and should not be recommended by MSE because they are the consumers nightmare.

With regards to your 'THEY ARE A COMMUNICATIONS COMPANY THAT CANNOT COMMUNICATE' - I personally think that BT is the first one that this label would fit perfectly.

Can you please state any other companies, which in your opinion are better - as I really want to get the line from someone who's not going to ignore me when there are problems.

Heinz - that's really not a problem for me - I just want to make sure that I don't have to deal with BT and that the job will be done quicker then the usual BT's timescale. If BT improved their customer service so that you're not switched between advisers spending nearly an hour on the phone every time you want to speak to someone and their job processing time would be reasonable - I wouldn't complain at all and would be happy to pay that extra few pounds to have it done by them. The problem is they don't - and this is why myself as well as many other consumers are trying to find a suitable alternative.

Anyway - thanks for pointing this out. If there's any better option from what I've suggested I'm very interested to hear about as I really don't want to be in the situation I was several times before, where I had to sign the agreement for a long period of time to get the rubbish service.
