I think Martin explains this here in his weekly mail

Presumably I need to change from Pipex/Tiscali to BT then get line rental with Primus, then I can use 18185?

Sounds like a lot of hassle.

No MSE is talking about blocking indirect access eg 18185, i was talking about cps (carrier pre select) having your calls with one supplier and your line rental with another,a different kettle of fish.

Even if you cant use the 18185 indirect access code on Pipex/Tiscali you can use their 0808 free phone access number. Different rates apply to this.

    See: http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php

Along similar lines to above what happens if you are not with BT and you have a problem with your line such as the connection point at your house rusts away and the fixing pulls out.

Does BT repair free of charge or what????

Primus use Openreach to deal with any faults. If the fault is not inside your premises on the premises side of the master socket their would not normally be a charge.

I keep getting all excited by the Primus price only to have to keep reminding myself that once I've added on the £2.50 for caller display it's more expensive than BT's £9.99 offer which has free caller display :(

Shame cos I'd be only too happy to switch from BT!

Yes MSE fails to take that into the equation if you value caller display as a lot of people do these days.

If you dont use an indirect access service calls to mobiles are expensive.

BT also include 0845/0870 calls in their bundles . Primus dont .
They dont even publish cost of ngn calls in the offer MSE is recommending see http://www.homephonechoices.co.uk/hpc_summary.asp?pid=230&kt=mse and click on call charges.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Car Insurance Carver!
Strangely, they appear to think there are oly 20 countries in the world too!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If your a BT Customer and your out of contract and your placing your calls through BT,they will normally give you one off credit of at least £24 if you say your thinking of leaving to join Primus.Which of course makes BT even more competitive.
Call their Customers Retention Team on 0800 800150 option 1

Eg. BT Line Saver £9.99 a month rental including caller display and inclusive 0845/0870 calls where appropriate less £24 credit brings line rental down to £7.99 a month. The same as Primus.

Where as Primus Saver line rental at £7.99 a month plus caller display £2.50 costs £10.49 plus you pay for all your 0845/0870 calls.

but you can, no problem. I've been doing it for years.

Surely I need to change to BT to use Primus and I can still continue to use 18185?

If your number was originally with BT and your line with Pipex/Tiscali is not unbundled (LLU) then you should be able to go direct to Primus.

If its unbundled the only choice you have if you want to keep the same number is to return to BT under the return to doner scheme free of charge, but your have to sign a 12 month contract with BT.

Out of interest whats the advantage to you in moving to Primus ?

    Avoid NewCallTelecom/Primus

    1. there are cheaper alternatives
    2. there are much better customer focussed companies

Primus/NewCall have been found guilty of failing customers by the regulator Otelo, and even refuse to respond to communication and the decisions of the Ombudsman, so rest assured they are not interested in little fish like small customers.

The call centres are offshore and they will talk over you, never call back as promised, refuse you to speak to a manager, fail to bill you correctly etc etc

Despite giving a glasgow address, there i no-one in the UK they will let you speak to.

THEY ARE A COMMUNICATIONS COMPANY THAT CANNOT COMMUNICATE, and should not be recommended by MSE because they are the consumers nightmare.

I'm just planning on choosing Primus to install my line at the new property as BT has failed to deliver. I've been told that my new line will be installed on the 31st of January - BT Openreach guys came over and told me that there's no cable to connect to - apparently BT has forgotten to check that tiny detail. We're already in March and I still don't know when my line will be installed not to even mention - active.

I've done some research and found that Primus also installs lines - so you DON'T have to use BT at all. That is a fantastic news for me as I wanted to avoid going with BT to start with - I had a lot of problems with these guys in the past, but didn't know that there's an alternative.

Now - for all of you who are worrying about the phone call charges - if you have a broadband - worry no more. Over the past few days I've done a lot of research and found the VoIP option, which in short is simply using telephone over the internet and the cost of calls is a fraction of what you pay for standard calls.

There is a company, which I'm also planning to use for this purpose as they had very good reviews from many people who used them - they are called VoiceHost.co.uk. I've spoken to their representative over the phone and he's confirmed that the ongoing / monthly cost is for :

    - £1 for additional extension (one comes free, but if you need two telephones installed that's what you pay for each extra)
    - You will get a free 0843 number, but if you require a geo one then the cost is £2 per number

That's all - meaning that if you only need one telephone and are happy to have 0843 number then you only pay for your calls - and these are cheap and you pay for as much as you talk.

The costs for UK are ( peak or off-peak - doesn't matter ):

    landline 1 pence
    mobile 9 pence

and for calling abroad costs start at 1.1 pence (£0.011) per minute.

You can check their calling plans at their website.

Now - that's line and calls sorted, but if you're also in need of a broadband, I've found this company, which seem to have really nice deals and again - I've picked it by doing some really 'heavy duty' research and checking reviews as I'm not signing up to anything these days without doing so.

The company is called TitanADSL and the good thing with these guys apart from the customer service is the packages they offer. You don't have to sign up for 24 months - they have packages, which you can sign up for that start from 1 month, 3 months etc. - so you're not tied up with the contract, which normally means that even if you get a rubbish service you still have to pay (and I've been in this situation several times - very frustrating).

Their usual speeds are of up to 24MB download and 1.4MB upload and most of their packages offer Unlimited usage.

I thought I'll share it with you guys as I know how difficult it is to get the good service at a reasonable price these days. I hope this will help some of you.
