Are tyre chains legal in this country?

I have googled it & gets lots of conflicting answers.

Anyone used tyre socks?

Thinking of being prepared this year;)

What are the differences between snow tyres & winter tyres?

Winter Tyres are a softer compound designed to perform best on roads at lower temperatures (typically temperatures below 7 degrees). Snow tyres are designed for use on snow.

I hope tyre chains are legal in this country as I've just bought a set :)

I have a set of Autosocks. I've used them twice where the snow was compacted and I couldn't get any traction. The biggest advantage of them is that they fold up into a handy zip bag about the size of a ladies handbag.

One thing to consider is whether your route will be filled with abandoned cars. You can have all the snow chains, shovels etc in the world but if you can't get anywhere then they're no use.

Also, much of the ability to keep a vehicle moving in adverse weather conditions is down to driver skill.

We have all seen the morons revving away in first gear at full throttle....going nowhere.

Snow chains, apart from breaking up the road surface, will seriously impede your handling as they should be fitted on the driven wheels (mostly fronts nowadays) - try braking with these on in non snow conditions.

    Illegal.

Would disagree with that my Laguna with big tyres on is crap in the snow, same snow, same day in a i10 no problems.

Though did spend most of the time the snow was down with a rather large snowmobile outside my house, but thats another storey.

I know that some cars perform a lot better than others in snow, however they all do better if driven properly.

Maybe I'm just having a blonde moment here... but how are you supposed to get the autosocks completely over the wheel? You would need to jack the car up, surely?

If you're using chains while driving on a surface where the snow is so thin that the chains are hitting the road surface, you are doing it wrong.

If you're going to get some tyre socks now's probably a good time to get them. I was after a pair the height of last winter and I just couldn't get hold of any at a reasonable price. WeissSocks were the ones I saw.
