    Today is D-day.
To explain, my lovely DSS1 is 17 and went int the army at 16, has been attending Harrogate Army Foundation since January, and is due to graduate on the 16th December 2010. He has excelled at everything, is a model junior soldier and loves what he does.
Obviously am a very proud mum.
This time last year DSS1 was a bit of a reprobate, bored and drinking every chance he got (never knew how he got the money because we blocked every known source etc). He got into some minor trouble with the police (vandalism, no excuses).
Then announces he wants to go into the Army.
This from the boy who could'nt handle discipline at school:eek::eek::eek:.
So we decided to support his decision(:eek: from me).
Off he went Jan this year and we waited everyday for the call, asking us to come and get him. The call never came. SO off we went in February to his 6 week passing-in parade. And there is my boy standing to attention with his platoon and the full company, in the pouring rain on a cold, wet parade ground, 40 minutes witout moving while all the other platoons marched on. And there is is overemotional step-mum (me) standing with all the other parents in the rain, crying enough tears of pride to sink a battleship.
The stoop shouldered, arrogant, teenager who left us had been replaced with a disciplined young man, who had pride in himself and his counterparts.
To cut along story short, on a couple of training exercises over the past few months (all of which DSS1 had excelled at and completed.
It emerged he'd been having pain and cramps and he just got on with it, said he did'nt want to be a wimp .
Now we're talking about 12 mile runs in full battledress with a 50lb pack on his back and he was completing these in just over 1hour 45 mins. Anyway 2 weeks ago he collapsed and could'nt continue and the medics took him back to the med centre, he had x-rays and did bloods etc., Turns out he has high arches and the constant training may have done damage as he was running in normal boots and should have had specal footwear to absorb the impact.
ANyway today he is in front of the medical board to see if there is a way forward, if with physio, he can continue or if this is going to stop him training. Worst case scenario is a full medical discharge.
This could make or break his army career,
He was supposed to be going to Catterick after his graduation for 3 months basic training and then in April at 18, a full time soldier.
We dont know what time he's in front of the medical board (just that its this afternoon).
I just hope he gets the outcome that he wants, he is going to be devastated if they discarge him.
Positive vibes winging their way to Yorkshire would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you x

Fantasia, sending positivity to DSS1. (I am also geographically close - not that it matters).

    Confession time

Arrived at work today in the piddling rain (40 minute drive from house) with packed lunch with me - I was oh so organised today
    .
Was walking up embankment to get to office when I slipped - face down in the mud:eek:. Don't think anyone saw me as I scuttled off back to my car. I was covered in mud & had to drive all the way home, full change of clothes & a shower & then drive back to start work.

Thought you might like hearing how my Monday started :D

  • Positive thoughts coming from me for you and him Fantasia :)

Thanks Susan, that is what we are all wishing for, and they have said the first step is 16 weeks of intensive speech therapy, so fingers crossed she responds to the therapist, and doesn't just throw herself on the floor and bang her head, which is what she tends to do when meeting someone new
  • Positive vibes coming your way , Fantasia:)

Oh dear - I'm sorry but this did make me smile :) reminds me of last week when I slipped in the corridor right outside the main office - I managed to get a nice friction burn on my tousers and knees and not one person from that office came to see if I was ok - I was dying of embarrasement especially as i was wearing a higher pair of shoes than normal which have now been relegated to my office drawer :(
