Do you put the heater on in the car?

With the soaring costs of fuel, is it saving on fuel if you don't put the heater on?
What a stupid question!
Do you walk around the streets naked to save wearing out your clothes/shoes?
Do you leave the lights off at night in your home?
Do you have a wash using a Flash Antibac Wipe?0 -
I can't bear being cold, I would use the heater even if it did increase fuel consumption.£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit
) - £588

If you can afford to run a car, then you can afford the extra miniscule consumption of fuel for turning on the heater.
This is money saving website - not money scrimping websiteHappiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
It would be interesting to see if there had been any objective tests of this. I'd be surprised if it were more than 0.1% of the total. In fact I'd imagine leaving the engine idling for 10 seconds while you put your seatbelt on will likely use many times the amount of fuel the heater will consume in your entire journey.0

Regarding the really mean person in the OP who doesn't turn it on to save money, the OP should ask them to compare the cost of running the heater (which uses a waste by-product of running the engine) vs the cost of 4 people burning up extra carbohydrates in order to maintain body temperature.
It'll probably cost you the price of a packet of ready salted crisps in increased food consumption to make up for doing that journey in the car.0 -
I would think that in some situations - running the hot air into the cabin could make the engine more efficient as it will have a cooling effect on it.
Same as the RAM air intakes which pressurise the intake air and get more into a hot engine. hotter air is less dense and lowers efficiency.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
In my earlier cars I used to have to put the heating on when it was hot weather to stop it overheating.0
