Sorry E585 not listed & cant unlock using Above Instructions!
It is necessary to follow the same procedure which we use to unlock Huawei E220, describes as follow,
* Download the following Program,
http://www.speedyshare.com/files/22938435/unlock-e58xx.zip
This Zip File contain 05 files & follow the Read Me Text file for unlock any of Huawei E58xx)
Select the Application port of the E585
(This can easily reveal from Windows Device Manager)
run dc-unlocker with your modem-e5830 ON (NO sim card inside)
a. check with dc-unlocker if modem is LOCKED/UNLOCKED (This is Free)
if locked:
1. run 'qmat5.06'
a. hardwere forensics -> use mobile port (if port = com 4)
b. serial com port -> com4 - huawei mobile connect - 3g aplication interface (com4)
c. line where is "start" pick "Read EFS"
d. mark "Alternative Method"
e. hit -> Lets Go
f. save the file as xx.txt
g. if impossible to save xx.txt open saved file with NOTEPAD
2. open file xx.txt at the end you will see 8-digit number, copy it.
3. open CardLock_UnLock-e58xx and paste the 8-digit number and unlock (only if you see imei of your modem).

Got one of these on offer from T-Mobile a few months back. Was just about to go in the drawer as I've decided I need full strength broadband, but great to know that when I need it again I can go with whoever has the best deal on offer. Thanks!0

OP, thanks, very helpful post.
My dongle is from Orange and automatically loads the Orange Everywhere software when it is plugged in. When I get an O2 PAYG SIM is there any way I can delete the Orange software from the dongle?0 -

You can stop it from starting up automatically, by using MSconfig or the start up tool within CCleaner to disable the corresponding item.
Then you can start the connection up manually or install generic connection software for you make and model of modem.0
