Vegetarian Christmas alternative?

Those Wellingtons Annagrant posted the link to look great. Personally, I am not a nut roast as a traditional dinner kind of gal, but something else you could consider is Marks and Spencers do vegetable kievs; they are two to a box in the chiller section and I am sure they are about £3, I like them for a "special" meal if I am the only veggie; they are really quite special and unusual and you could simple do all your normal christmas dinner and heat these through for the veggies. I would not be insulted at all to sit down to that at Christmas.:)It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Some veggies dont eat Quorn as it has non free range egg white in it (or used to). I dont eat it for that reason.
Quorn don't use battery farm eggs anymore and haven't for about five years. Quorn now have the Vegetarian Society's seal of approval - I've just checked the packets in my freezer!¿Alguien ha visto a mi nave espacial?
Biting is excellent. It's like kissing, only there's a winner.0 -

Whatever you serve remember, if you have 10 people including to veggies, you need at least 4 portions of veggie food. Because the meat eaters will all think, ooh, that looks interesting and try a bit on top of their standard turkey dinner.
Thats true - and a good point. I certainly recall a particularly successful meal out - where I took over the whole restaurant and it opened up specially for us. I specified exactly what both the meat-eaters and vegetarians were to have to the restaurant owner and he cooked it up specially for us - and everyone LOVED their food - but there were definitely envious glances at the plates of the vegetarians:D.
At a personal level - I've fed all sorts of people veggie meals by now - and a high-quality home vegetarian meal will also attract "tasters":rotfl:0 -
im vegan , the family dont eat turkey etc so we have various indian dishes for christmas , everyones happy
i just dont see why people still have to do the traditional meal when it causes so much trouble
Because the rest of us like itMy sister lives abroad so we do Christmas with turkey and all the trimmings whenever she is here. We've done Christmas, complete with crackers and pudding in the middle of summer - you get funny looks when you answer the door with your cracker hat on in August!
RAS good point.
I'm now royally confused, I'm reading through the Veggie Christmas thread. There seems to be a real split between whether nut roast is great or just a vege food clich!...
Can't really afford to buy anything, plus I'd rather do something homemade...
Will keep reading....Piglet

Yes, nut roast. It's an old chestnut (groan), but good. Quorn is excellent as well."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0

I'm vegetarian and do NOT like nut roast. Horrible stuff.
How about baked camembert? That's easy to make and will go well with the cranberry sauce. Just make sure the camembert is veggie (some cheese is still made with animal rennet).0 -
Some nut roasts are great - and some are made with peanuts in is my own personal take on this.
Nut roast IS a cliche for veggie Christmas lunches - but then isnt turkey a cliche for the non-veggies? As a veggie - we don't actually make nut roasts for ourselves very much at all - but do appreciate a good-quality one that we dont have to make ourselves. Now - with a bit of onion gravy with it and some nice vegetables - followed by that vegetarian Christmas pudding with suitable accompaniment - then I personally would be quite happy with that.0 -

Hmmm..each to their own on this - and I personally would regard that as a "starter" - not the main course. Of course- being me - I'd also go off into worrying as to whether the cheese was organic (or came complete with "added extras" - eg antibiotic residues, etc that might still be "in the system" of non-organically reared cows....).0 -
I use the quorn roast you can get it plain or with stuffing. It is lovely with gravy and all the trimmings and any leftovers I grate and mix with mayonnaise for sandwiches.0

Are you sure they are simply vegetarian and not vegan? Veggie is a lot easier coz you can include things like dairy and eggs!
How about a stuffed butternut squash? Half your squash, remove the seeds, place cut side down on a baking tray, bake in a medium oven until soft, then remove, allow to cool if you like then stuff the middle with a suitable mix of veggies/rice/lentils or similar, pre cooked if they need it, and top with cheese. Bake until cheese is melted and filling is cooked. Easy to prep in advance and simply pop into oven with roast on the day.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
