I'm from Preston, we need more info from you.
As mentioned perviously some parts of Fulwood are nice, but not all of them.
I think when I sell up and move again I am looking at the lower end of Ashton such as Powis Road/Egerton Road area.0 -
I live about 20 min bus ride from centre of Preston in a town called Blackburn. Are you Asian? Looking to avoid "racist" area?
Are you white? Looking to avoid non-white/non-English?
Looking for mixed area? Working class; Middle Class; Well to do Professionals.
I strongly suggest you rent before you buy, that way if the area doesn't suit you're not stuck trying to off load a house no one wants.0 -
If you like new builds then Bucksaw Village near Leyland is worth a look.
It has a new £50 million primary school, community centre as well as a new railway station planned for August 2011.0 -
i grew up in Longton and it was a lovely village, as are new longton and hutton but pretty quiet in hutton. Longton has about 100 pubs (well 6) which are nice and there is a big booths and a few other necessary shops ( i worked in the chemist!) its quite expensive i think tho..i think i was spoilt growing up in such a nice place!! the bus service is awful tho this far out and is apparently worse now than when i lived there! 2 good primary schools though!
Penwortham has some really nice bits and 3 of the main secondary schools and some nice primary scholls and there are more shops and a bit more going on...some rough bits tho nearer kings fold and town. bus service is good and you could walk to town in 20 mins.
Northern Fulwood is quite posh and has an ok bus system, good for motorway links too!
I don't like places like Leyland and Chorley but maybe I'm a snob!! they have good rail links too preston.
I miss my living there!

Thanks for all your great comments. We are a couple in our early 50, we do not require any schools, area is more important than the size of house i'd like something outside Preston centre, but with good transport links as i dont drive, our budget is £200,000 our house at the moment is a 3 bed semi, but 2 beds is ok. My husband works in Warton, so a 30-40 min commute would be ok0

fulwood would seem to be a good area to look at, or the villages north of that. commuting from south preston would be possible but traffic will be a pain for getting through the town centre to the other side! also, there will be a good buses for you into the town centre. maybe longridge or round there would be nice too!0

Sometimes its a case of likeing where you live and not really knowing other areas that well. I have lived in both chorley and am currently on the edge of leyland and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
To be honest we could get to longton quicker than leyland train station from this end of leyland lol.
From a purely practical level houses are cheaper and crime levels are extremely low. We live on the far side of Leyland towards midge hall, it is small semi rural and as my OH says its like going back in time really lol. Price wise 3 bed semis are around 120-130k around here.

I think you are always going to get people recommending where THEY live, otherwise they would be admitting to themselves that where they live is probably not their first choice!
If your husband is working in Warton (I assume BAe), then have a look at Lea Town/Salwick/Clifton as it is lovely round there and an easy commute to Warton. It is also a single bus ride into town.0 -
Just to mention somewhere nobody else has...Garstang might suit you nicely. It's on a good regular bus route which goes into Preston, and north up to Lancaster and beyond. It is easily commutable from Warton - we live in Garstang and my husband spent a good few years working at Warton and found it a great drive, the route seems to avoid many of the traffic blackspot areas and he never got stuck. Took him around 25-30 mins.
Garstang itself is a large-ish village, with one main high street and several small lanes running off it housing all kinds of local shops. Although it's a village, it has a good selection of pubs (not counted but must be around 9), at least 3 supermarkets (Co-op, Sainsbury's and a lovely new big Booths), and most other things you can think of - pharmacy, flower shops, post office, clothes shops, dressmakers, bookshops, coffee shops, chippy, chinese, a few nice restaurants, local butcher and bakers, several banks, health shop, card shops....anything you could need really. It also has pretty low crime rates and lots of friendly people.
When I moved here I didn't know Preston at all (my husband did), and I feel so lucky we picked this area. As well as being a lovely place to live, there are plenty of local walks along the river/canal from your house, and easy to get to the coast (Blackpool, Pilling, St Annes etc), the city (Manchester, Liverpool), the Lakes, etc.
EDIT: I should point out that I may be slightly biased seeing as I live here, but hopefully others might agree with me :-)0 -
I agree. I've never lived in the area (so not biased by that!) but I did work near Garstang for a while and it was a lovely place. Thought about suggesting it myself but didn't know about public transport options there. I'm currently looking for houses around Chorley-way but Garstang is too far north for my needs...0
