iolanthe07 wrote: »"60+" could mean anything. Many country roads these days have a 50 mph limit on them anyway, and even if that particular country road was 60 mph, it is meant to be a limit, not a target.
It's also the speed the authorities judge to be acceptably safe under good conditions, and I class myself to be able to judge when conditions are good. But you still get the idiot who cannot judge the speed of approaching traffic or simply cannot comprehend that pulling out in front of you in open traffic conditions is not acceptable.
I must have pre-empted this one by putting up this post.
Now I don't have many near misses, I tend to be a defensive driver. However;
Yesterday I was travelling on a local B road, doing 60. It's a road I know and there is a tee junction at one point thats a little difficult to see out off due to the hedges. It really should have a stop sign not a giveway when entering the main road.
Becuase of this I had eased off and slowed to 50 when a car pulled up coming out of the junction. He saw me, he was looking right at me from 100 yds away, and proceeded to absolutely crawl out of the junction towards me. I had my foot over the brake but didn't as I was about to pass behind him only 20yds from the junction. Just as I said to myself "that was too bloody close", a 4x4 that was behind him decided "if he could go then so could I" and drove out of the junction the opposite way to the other car. I was too close to brake and so swerved only just managing to miss the thing as it had swung out accross the centre of the road when pulling out.
What is the mentallity of folks that drive like sheep or lemmings????:mad:

And usually those same ones that pull out without looking are the ones who then pootle along at 40mph with you stuck behind them for mile after mile.0 -

You might be frighteningly close to the truth......
I have in the past had arguments with one person who deliberately pulls out in front of drivers who HE deems to be driving too fast, he argues that if the driver hits him it's their fault for speeding.....
What he doesn't seem to grasp is that there's no proof of speeding! AND that 2 months in hospital after being T boned by a ton of metal, plus loss of car+NCB is NOT worth it!!!
Worst of all he does not understand that HE DOES NOT HAVE A SPEED GUN IN HIS HEAD!!!!!!!!! perception of speed is MASSIVELY altered by factor's such as noise, size, ambient light, etc etc etc!
This guy also like's to slam on his main beam and swerve into the path of drivers who use their front fog lights......
This guy is what I hate most, a clueless vigilante driver... He thinks he's a great driver (because he never breaks speed limits and has no points), but he create's danger on the road by passively winding people up until they crack!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Built up rant, not just this week.;);)
Today, anyone in the M1 corridor around 25 to 30 will know the horrendous fog/bright/fog conditions we have had.
Not driven far, just the usual a/b roads around home. So why given all the warnings on the traffic radio are 50% of drivers using NO lights at all, and a further 25% using side lights only, which to be honest equates to sweeet foook Hall???????
I did something today that many would consider bad practice. It was, and I apologuise. Got behind a no lighter and put full headlights on to see if he got the message. DHF. Followed him for 5 miles, at least my lights made him visible :A
Before the comments it is a fact that full beam does not dazzle in daylight/fog;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I live at the corner house and I have to indicate left to turn in to my road then almost straight away indicate right to turn in to my drive, all this is on the corner, I use my break lights to alert the driver/s behind I'm slowing down and/or stopping.
I often get dirty looks as I turn in to my drive as I've held them up for may be 10 seconds or so, but recently I was indicating to turn right in to my drive and had a car almost touching my bumper, as I turned in to my drive he honked his horn and shouted to me, I stopped in my drive and got out and he was still there, he said, "Where do you think you are going?" I said, "Here, because this is where I live, if I park in someone else's drive they don't like," he told me to F*** Off then drove off at speed almost hitting another car coming the other way.
A story I always like to tell is of a lady who had broken down in the middle of the road and a man behind was honking his horn for her to move, she calmly got out and went up to him and said, "Sorry to be a pain and hold you up, can you get my car going and I'll keep my hand on the horn fore you?"0 -

If you can see the cars around you at a safe distance say 300 yards there is no need for them to alter their lighting, whether
with no lights on
or side lights or
dipped beams
I always make my decesion to light up or to increase the lights to fog lights on whether I can see the cars infront and behind at a safe distance. If I can't see them I look for someone with the next level of lighting, if I can see them I match their lighting. In my whole driving life I have only ever used fog lights for a total of about 5 times. Normal dipped beam lighting I use very often too many times to count but I also drive without lights if it is not needed. I would have to have been there to see if you were right to be angry.
But then it's not very foggy in South Wales.0 -
But then it's not very foggy in South Wales.
Speak for yourself. Plenty of fog up in the valleys these last few days.
Anyways, rear fog lights are used when visibility is down to 100 yards, fronts are used when visibility is so bad that normal headlights make visibility worse, not better.
Plenty of idiots on the M4 the other day running full beams and all foglights despite the fact that the fog is sitting a good few meters above the road with just the very tops of the tallest HGVs starting to touch it and visibility absolutely fine. :mad:0 -
And it was down to less than 50 yards yesterday in places here hence the issue;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
