Hey DKLS-Thanks for the reply!
Agree with 'sardines' in a trian....some people LIKE train journeys....I HATE them! I think given all the suggestions on here (& thanks for them all-as usual MSER'S allways find time to help) I'll drive & get a car park space as close to the Merrion as i can. This http://leeds.gumtree.com/leeds/33/68399233.html looks like the kind of thing that'd be ok-a 4 minute walk to the Merrion centre. Obviously once I start then maybe someone else drives the same roue? That'd be a bonus!
The company I'm going to has some spaces attheir city centre office(waiting list-vastly reduced at £4 & a 1/2 odd quid a day) & also at the car park near the Chineese supermarket (if i remember about 10 mins to merrion) at £3-50 a day. As I'm going 'off peak' times (11am start for training & 12 noon start on shifts-returning either 6pm or 8pm once training over) I'll miss the commuter traffic.
I think in all honesty even if it means paying a quid or more a day for a parking space in/next to/within 4 mins off the merrion I'd pay it. Maybe I'm just too old & grumpy for trains (!)...but the hassle factor of the train (ie hoping to get a free parking place in huddersfield etc & the sheer number of people-god what an unrelaxing start to the day!) outweighs I think any advantage for me. Will have a look around the Merrion residential area (don't know it at all but will have a look) as well. I do know I could probably find a free space up past university in hyde park area but thats a good 20 minutes walk e/way & the fact that a)-Not guaranteed a parking spot & b)-the area (!) & length of walk I'd rather pay £17 odd quid a week for a car park!0 -
If you can get sub £5 a day at the top end of Leeds, good. £3.50 and you can't grumble at all!
I know a place in Leeds which does £12 a week near the centre...but the other end of the centre for you. You'd be looking at a 20 minute walk e/way at a brisk pace.
As for the train, I wouldn't consider it for the hassle as DKLS says...plus the amount of ones that get cancelled/are late is silly too but that's is more rush hour times.0 -
Fozzeh....cheers for that! You seem to know Leeds....what do you think of the location on the link I've posted?
As you say.....£3-50 a day seems a good deal!0 -

I live on Manchester Road in Linthwaite!
Oh I used to know that end of Linfit well!
It wasnt all bad on the train, there was the rare occasion when a train with 6 or more carriages would turn up, and a collective sigh of relief was heaved as all could have a seat, pity the poor sods at dewsbury though, they never stood a chance.
£3.50 for Leeds is pretty good, last time I worked there was £5 a day just down from the train station.
Last tip is listen to Sally traffic on Radio 2 before you set off, as it sounds daft but can be quicker getting to Leeds going via Metham, Holmfirth, and picking the M1 up nr bretton when the 62 is doing its best impression of a ncp car park.
Roll on the startrek beam me up style of getting to work.:D0 -
DKLS....Luckily I'll avoid the worst M62 times....my training for 4 weeks is an 11am start/finish at 6 & my 'regular' hours will be 12noon-8pm......! Cheers for your help!0

With your start times you will struggle to find parking in LCC even with the notional allocated car parking. The bus will take too long if trying for all the way. You could try this

and for return this

Debtmonkey - you may not have seen the local news tonight (iplayer Look North if it's online yet), but Leeds City Council are serving planning enforcement notices on a number of 'bomb site' car parks. A large one in Holbeck is £3 a day and has been operating for 11 years, even offering a minibus into town as part of the service. If the Council get their way it will be shut down in due course - 6 other similar sites are affected.0

Eamon-thanks-will check out the links! Hope to find out a bit more about how the reserved car-parking works in the next few days.....daveyjp-hi-think i know the ones you mean! Will check out iplayer later!0

If it were me I'd cycle the 17 miles, but I've been cycling for years so it wouldn't bother me too much.
I'd recommend buying a fold-up bike, and cycling to the train station. Take it on the train, once you're there, cycle to work.0 -

If you can secure that place for a fixed period (i.e. - the person who lets it out gaurentee's you the spot, no quibbles). I'd go for it.
My calculations make it 240 working days x £80pcm at £4 per working day. For top end Leeds, I'd take that. You can get bottom end Leeds for £65 (or, if you know the right place, £48...or free (legally but they get snapped up early doors)).
The advert says "Discount for long term rent". Maybe try get down to £70pcm on a 6mth rent and you're laughing. Even if not...I still think it's a very good price and it's less than 10 mins walk that in all reality!
If you have it as a weekend spot, bonus!0
