Another option that may help is to get a concrete floor tile and some round sticky silicon feet. Put the feet on the bottom of the speakers and the the tile. Then stand the speakers on the tile.

This will lessen the travel of bass enormously if it is just the structure of the building conducting the noise through contact with the speakers, if it is because you are playing the music too loud then the effect will be lessened.

Legally you are in breach of your tenancy as you are interfering with your neighbours right to quite enjoyment, your are also breaching the law by running a business from a residential property. In addition to this you are breaching the landlords lease terms, possibly his mortgage agreement.

You are someone who has already suffered from noise nuisance so should be more considerate. If your business is successful go and rent commercial premises.

Jay, not much you can do bar try and mediate with said neighour. Try and agree times you can play music that suit you both. maybe also invite to your apartment so she can see it's not acually that loud.

Any posibility of insulating the wall? couple of old matteress' would do the trick.

Speak for yourself. What good will two mattresses do if the sound is being carried by contact and the structure of the building, rather than airborne excitation of the wall?

The OP isn't exactly 'playing music', they're running a business from domestic premises.

The music needs to not annoy your neighbours else you'll find you're looking for somewhere else to live.

You wanted peace once so you must understand how annoying it is.

Noise travels strangely and the base is likely to be ultra annoying for other people because of the structural nature of the property.

This has been a subject close to my heart in the past as I had a similar problem. First and foremost I believe in the saying Live and Let Live, I just wish more people had the same mind set!. Some people just don't like sound of any sort and just want silence and peace and quiet which is fair enough however were not all like that and we all have different interests and things we like to do in our own space after all we pay enough for it, what's wrong with a bit of compromise. I would never have a problem with people playing music no matter what type it is as long as its at a respectable hour. I have had neighbors in the past where they would have a session every Friday night, have there friends around, play music, smoke weed till 3am, its not the end of the world and some people make a big drama out of it when there doesn't need to be any issues, turn the TV up a bit louder. In my first House when I was at home I had a letter from the council one day saying that there was a complaint when I used to be a DJ in my earlyish youth. I called the council up and they were fine and we came to a resolution however I wished my neighbors came to me in the first to discuss the problem, it would have been a lot nicer. So I agreed to stop playing music at a certain time of the evening which I was okay with as I am pretty relaxed about things like this & I don't like conflicts. The situation was probably a lot different as we owned the house, no landlord etc & walls were thicker. The funny think about it though was that 4/5 years down the line her son got into deejaying and he started to do the same thing I was doing years before (I even gave him some guidance) & help so it panned out okay in the end. As I still love music but don't play so much, when looking for somewhere to live as I went rent mainly I scope out the infrastructure, neighbors & surrounding area etc to make sure I can have the option to live the way I would like to and be able to play my music without fear of complaining neighbors. My last place was in the sticks, it was great, luckily the neighbors pretty much done their own thing, I hardly saw them, that was in a small block of flats privately owned I had certain times that I could play at the level I was happy with and I never had not one compliant. Now I am back in London I have a neighbor who has a problem with sound so I play loud during the day when nobody is about as I can't be doing with people that just love to interfere just because they don't like it, but its okay for them to take up all the car spaces with there three cars so we have no where to park. My advice would be to find somewhere else were you won't have any conflicts. This kind of things really winds me up & the sort of people who constantly whinge about this kind of thing should get a life and let over people live theirs. If I had someone playing Dub Step next door to me I would be quiet happy to listen to it rather than a screaming baby or a pair 3" stilettos, in fact I don't give a !!!! what I neighbors does, I really don't care, he pays his/hers taxes works hard etc. They could be having orgies for all I care as long as I get invited.

Of course that's all in your opinion and from your point of view. You love music and would be happy living next to the OP, many would not. We are all different and, whilst I agree on "live and let live", if you are someone who cannot stand "noise" it is very difficult to get away from - it is impossible to close your ears completely. Add Bass into the equation and you also add vibration into the equation which exacerbates the problem.
  • I live in an expensive, private, apartment complex in the city center.
So does your neigbour!. She has the right to peacefull enjoyment of her home and your noise clearly disturbs her. You say you limit the volume and time you play the music. Just an hour at low volume for you is yet another hour of that row for her.
Face facts, your flat is clearly not suitable for this work.

This thread can go on for ever & as I have better things to do I will say one last thing to those who even complain on New Years Eve because the musics to loud (you know who you are) when your places gets robbed or you have a fire, you need a jump start in the morning, you get locked out and need to go around the back, you may need that neighbors assistance.
