What a ridiculous thing to say!! My friends and family don't care if my turkey is frozen or fresh, it's the time and effort that is put into it that counts. I haven't decided if I'll go for the fresh or frozen turkey yet but will buy either my beef or pork (haven't decided which to go for) from my local butcher as he fillets it whichever way my recipe calls for which makes things easier for me.

ETA I've just checked my Nigella, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver cook books and while they suggest fresh free range turkeys they also given an estimate of the length of time it takes to defrost a frozen one. Seems to me that they realise that not everyone has the money to be able to afford a fresh one and give you the option.

    Hiya

Has anyone tried Morrisons Turkey crown before? I say this as i quite like Morrisons fresh meat and the advert for their fresh turkey crown with stuffing looks nice(plus i should have the £25 voucher i could use towards it).

I am thinking of my local butcher but, i do a fresh lamb leg on christmas day as well and their is only 3/4 of us so i don't want a huge piece of turkey as well as the lamb, just a small enough piece to do 3 people christmas day and a few sandwiches after.

I was thinking of M&S but the price of theirs is disgusting(even though their meat is usually lovely) i don't want to pay £30 for a piece of turkey that serves 8-10 lol.

I will never get a Bernard Matthew frozen whole turkey again :(

My first christmas at making dinner a good few years ago i bought a big one from Tesco thinking i could use all the extra meat for curry, sandwiches, pie, stew etc once cooked it was bland ,most of the meat was browny coloured like leg meat ad it was tough, it totally ruined our dinner as it was horrible.

I was thinking of trying a duck this year(instead of the lamb leg) as the main lamb eater loves duck as well and M&S do a nice stuffed one with no bones for £21(i think) my partner has never tried it as a roast but likes it as a chinese so am not sure what to do on that one.........i personally fancy it for the change as we have had turkey and lamb for years.

We get one from the butcher, order went in a couple of weeks ago & we will pick up on Christmas Eve morning.

The first year we got fresh we were shocked at the cost, but I can honestly say it does taste so much better (cooked in the same way we would do frozen.

Since then we now buy most of our meat from him. Although it costs more it is a lot better quality and we would not revert back to the supermarket now unless our circumstances changed dramatically.
  • I always order the butter basted turkey from M&S, serves 10 so lasts us Xmas/boxing day and sandwiches. It's so nice and tender.
