Where & when do you order your Christmas turkey?

This is my first Xmas doing it all myself. Two years ago I did everything else and Mum brought the Turkey. I want to show her I can do it all so don't want to ask her about turkeys.

There will be 6 adults and 2 children. We have guests over the whole Xmas week so some leftovers would be handy.

I have no idea how big a bird I should order, from where and what should I expect to pay?
I was looking at M&S as I have £20 survey vouchers to use. Or should I go for the local butcher?
Are joints/ crowns good value?

Sorry for all the questions. I just want to get it all right. Thanks

I love M & S Turkey Crown with pork and caramelised chestnut stuffing, infact I have just order 2....because there is a fair few of us and we are a greedy lot. We always used the leftovers for sandwiches and hubby likes a turkey curry. They are expensive though but lovely......an early bird offer was place your order before 14th November (too late now) and spend over £50 and received either a bottle of white or red wine, however I was also offered the choice of a box of belgium chocolates. So got the chocolates so that is one present sorted and they were worth £8.

We prefer the crown, because no one wants the legs.

Forgot to add the M & S Turkey butter baste was new out last xmas.....I only knew about it because there had been an article in the newspapers stating it was " turkey with a tan" and I kept basting the turkey with it and gave it a lovely golden glaze.... its only 99p per tub and it kept the turkey lovely and moist so have ordered another tub for this xmas.

I am actually having Chicken for our christmas roast as none of my lot are overly fussed with the taste of turkey, but my mother and my grandmother always bought their turkeys from the local butcher, they would place an order with him 3 - 4 weeks before christmas and collect it on the 23rd. If you go to your local butcher he should be able to tell you how big a bird you need for your family. ALso agree with the turkey crown over a full turkey as it does save on wastage (unless you particularly have a thing for legs :D)

Dont buy any of that supermarket rubbish.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

A turkey from the local butcher for me, but it's my first Christmas too! I always get my meat from the butcher as it is sooo much better than the supermarket.

We got a large turkey breast from Morrisons last year - best I've ever had.

  • We normally have a leg of lamb and a chicken.
  • We have a Turkey crown from our local butchers. We tell him how many of us there are and what we want it for (christmas dinner and leftovers for couple meals) and they advise us the best weight to get. They have been spot on the last 3 years and it has been a perfect size.
  • I have bought a Bernard Mathews frozen turkey crown for the past 2 years from Tesco and its lovely. Bought it I think Oct/Nov time when they were half price and put it in the freezer. Great value for money.
