    thanks both :)

I've checked the bank this evening and it's already showing a payment that has gone out of the bank dated 29-12-10 ... time travel anyone ?

I'm not sure what's in the process of going out so will be checking it daily and then nip to bank on wednesday to put cash in. It's in the process of going over the limit with whatever is going out so fingers crossed cash in on wed will stop that. I dunno.

I'm with Natwest - I think they show up as having gone on Saturday on online banking, but I don't think they actually go until next working day!

  • Good plan!
I have made a spreadsheet for all my outgoings each month (bills etc) and one offs like car insurance/tax are included too. I have then worked out how much these average out at a month and transfer this to a separate account for direct debits. This way what is left is mine!

Just remember to buy the refills on ebay..they cost a fortune in the shops!

Alternatively - you can make your own customised planner pages and print them off. There's an excellent site here

  • I really like this thread, I use to think that I was slightly anal having A4 note books to record all my financial affairs, from balance transfers to extra cash at the end of the month and the amount transferred into savings accounts.

It has definitely helped me become very aware of my financial situation, each year I calculate how much total debt I have and compare this to previous years (In the hope that they are reducing). The reduction became a lot more noticeable once I ditched the CC and swore never to touch them again.

I have a list of all my direct debits/ standing orders the dates and the amounts. (I have also copied this into the back of my diary to have with me when am out and about). I have also listed other weekly expenses such as rent, food, utilities etc.

I have also listed essential bills and luxuries into separate lists, in case my situation changes and I have to make major changes. The luxury includes sky, internet, landline phone, holiday fund, savings etc

I then list my income amounts and sources and then compare with my expenses.
Whatever is left is then divided into equal amounts for my weekly spend.

The thing it all looks so great on paper, knowing exactly what your annual household expenditure. I just need to get into the habit of withdrawing cash for the weekly grocery shop as this is the one area in which there is an overspend each week. :silenced:

  • Hi Guys,
I thought I would look at this thread as it may give me some inspiration for 2011, but after looking at most of your imput, it left me feeling a bit low. I feel I am more in debt than most on this thread as I can't see when I will get out of debt even if I have a diary /spread sheet. I have for a long while kept my eyes on my out goings the D/D and S/O with the bank statements and now online banking which has helped me to try and stay in control, but often I can't help to spend over my over draft because my out goings seems to be more than my incoming.

I have not even had any credit cards I can use as I couldn't keep up with the payments when I fell in to serious debt which I do miss, s they use to help me out in and emergencies.

I will have to pick myself up and go to poundland or my local pound shop to get an diary to see if this will help.

I feel I my have to join the BR thread if this does not work for me.

Any way good luck, to all of you, it seems as you are doing really well.

  • Hi Naefags,

If it is the basic bank account I would not have an overdraft I take it, and that keeps my going as I am always over the limit. I know what you mean about the bank charges.
