Tipping - Do you?

  • I take your point about supermarket workers etc, but I would tip the lad who washes my car, and always tip postmen etc at Christmas. I even tip the lad who delivers the free weekly paper that is such dross it's only used for wrapping food waste :rotfl: Tradition has a lot to do with tipping practices, unfortunately supermarket workers are not considered to be giving a "personal" service.

I have handed in chocolates to a SA in B&Q who was very helpful to me when I was looking for a new door and locks after a burglary, box of biscuits to the Vet when they were very kind and a cake to the guys at the skip when I thought I had dropped my car key in one of the skips :o

A couple of times I've asked for the duty manager in a supermarket if someone is pleasant and helpful and asked for it to be noted. As above my lovely postman and the dustmen, who once offered me his phone when I locked myself out, always get something at Christmas.

Waiting may not be a skilled job but my daughter works in events and good service from her and her colleagues make many a wedding day the best day for the bride and groom.

i tip in restaurants when the service has been excellant, if i've been ignored or not checked on i tend to mark down.

check out his very funny blog for some thoughts on tipping from a waiter

I think spyware just came through via that link!

  • I tip about 10% if the service has been good.

We ate out at a restaurant at the O2 at the weekend and they added 12.5% which we asked to be taken off (first time evre done that!) as the service was poor. At least 6 waiting staff stood at the bar chatting and our plates were left for half hour after we'd finished. Same happened after dessert and then another wait, resulting in us having to drag them over for the bill.
  • Last time I tipped was a taxi driver and it probably worked out at about 10% - I'm very much a 'keep the change' type with cabbies. It seems to work because I get help with my bags most times!

I tip in restaurants if the service is good - normally around 10% - and also tip my hairdresser at 10%. My mum used to tip the milkman when we had one (normally £10 at Christmas) but we have so many different postmen that there almost doesn't seem like much point in tipping them, although they are very good.

The thing that concerns me (as an ex-hotel barmaid) is whether the tips go to the staff who served you or into a pot. Certainly in my old job all the tips were supposed to go into a pot and were then distributed at Christmas according to who'd been there the longest, which isn't a system I particularly like as to me a tip is a way of saying thank you for going the extra mile.

Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")
  • I do always tip in restaurants as a matter of course unless the service has been awful- I tip in hairdressers and taxis but generally no where else.....and i hate it when the 12.5% tip is automatically added to the bill. In fact, i would probably tend to be more generous if it wasn't added on there!

I have to admit I'm shocked by the number of people on here who don't tip. I would only not tip if I had bad service. Otherwise it's a minimum of 10% in restaurant but normally in more like 15%. I always round up in a taxi. I always give delivery people a minimum of £1, normally £2. And if the barstaff have been good I will get them a drink.
  • i normally tip a bit normally just to round the bill up to the nearest £5

if i dont tip i tell the waiting staff why not to see if they cn improve for next time i go there lol
problem is now in a lot of resturants the tips dont actually go to the waitress or waiter it gets pooled and there usually a couple of lazy ones that essentially get free tips. I think this is wrong

Is tipping an age, as well as culture thing?

I am 28, and personally I don't feel the need to tip, or think there is even that much of an expectancy of it in day to day life.

I hardly ever tip for anything, I sometimes round up the change from taxis or bills.

I go along the lines of, they are already being paid for the service provided by their employers in their wages, so why should I give them any extra.

My idea of tipping is usually a "keep the change". Typical example being after a night out in Leeds; my taxi fare home from is usually between £9.40 - £9.80 so that's basically a tenner. Same when eating out.

I do tip in busy bars on the first round. It always guarantees that I'm not waiting long for the next one and sometimes happens to magically turn some singles into doubles. Also, the look on the face of people who see me swan up to a packed the bar and walk away in less than a minute is worth the extra few quid.
