Married to a Canadian so not tipping is socially very rude to him.
10% tip for normal service up to 20% for exceptional. Like Haribo we don't add tips onto the credit card, it's cash and to the waiter.
We went out for a meal with friends as a treat (they were paying), for the £130 meal and excellent service, they tipped £2, to my husband that is an insult tip - a way of telling the waiter they were rubbish, so he went back and retipped under false pretenses.
I've tried telling him that people don't see tips in that way in this country but it's too deeply ingrained0 -
I always tip the juniors that wash hair in hair salons, and not the stylist.Won through MSE: Iphone 3GS and 4s with Lucozade in Oct 2010

When I've been in Mr A's for my monthly shop and get good treatment at the check-out - obviously there's no room for tipping - I go on the supermarket's website and give great feedback. There's a question on there that asks if any member of staff has made your shopping experience better - I think THAT'S the place to give them a personal mention.
There's often comments slips around the place too, so those can be filled in and dropped into a box.
Good service is only to be expected but 'over and above' deserves a thank you and a mention to the company.
Back in February 1968, I started my first waitressing job (aged 17) in a 'decent restaurant'. My very first customer left me a £5 tip and commented on the service to the owner, by letter later that week. I was 'chuffed to little mint balls'.

As this isn;t Old Style, I'll move it to the Eating Out Board
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
I always tip my hairdresser and always tip in restaurants unless a service charge has been added. I never put the tip on a card - I always give cash to the waiter that served me.
My tip in restaurants does depend on the service I receive but I do always tip as I think they get paid crap for doing a crap job. I would hate to be a waiter having to balance plates and also I know they get a lot of grief from customers and most of it is uncalled for. Still that's the general public for you - I speak as someone who works in a shop!!!The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Just because you believe that an employer should pay a decent wage to ensure tips aren't necessary, that doesn't mean that if you refuse to tip, the employer is going to pay the staff more.
I agree with that although it doesn't make it right for customers to have to 'make up' a shortfall in wages.
Although I'm careful with money and try to spend in 'cheap' places. I prefer to support businesses that value their staff.
For example. I use my local bike shop which gives service and advice far superior to the the service you get in Halfrauds. The 3 staff are all grown men with families. Much different to the kids you often see in Halfrauds straight out of college and working on min wage.
It's hard with restaurants as the wages are often low. If I don't tip and had good service I always make a point of saying a genuine thank you and supporting that business with regular visits.
Another question. Does anybody tip in McDonalds?0 -
Hmm,
While I think about it another senario.
My Brother took me to a Hooters restaurant once. Service was rubbish, not unpleasant just poor. The dozy bint didn't know what a pint of Tetleys was (though shown on the menu) and had forgotton the order by the time she turned her back! She had to come back and take it again!
At the end she presented the reciept with 'PLEASE TIP' written on it in highlighter and little kisses all over it! The service was crap but she was 'eye candy' which I suppose is one of the main things she is their for.
So, more for the gents Would you tip because she showed a bit of cleavage?
I know a guy that had various businesses, once of them being a strip club. Tips certainly happen there. I've known a £20 dance be rewarded with a £1000 tip. Crazy!0 -

Generally I don't tip because I don't have much money myself, and like others, I think the hairdressers or taxi drivers are earning a wage which they agreed to, and therefore shouldn't need any extra to supplement their pay. That said, if somebody has gone above and beyond, or been particularly helpful then I will tip.
I hate it when restaurants automatically add a service charge! It's so presumptuous! I went for a meal a few years back and the service was atrocious; our food didn't even come out at the same time, so some people had to sit in front of their food for 20 mins before the rest of the food arrived - and I mean 20 MINUTES! My food was placed in the centre of the table so everyone thought it was just a shared appetiser and dug in before I had a chance to tell them it was my main meal! The entire meal took about 4 hours because the wait was so long, and yet we STILL had to pay a 10% service charge. We obviously didn't pay the extra 10% but the staff were furious!! ...and that's why I don't like to tip!0
