How to deter dog pooing in my garden

I have recently moved into my new home and have spent a lot of blood, sweat and energy on transforming my horrendously overgrown and unloved front garden. It is a small patch and is now a combination of slate, large pebbles and a few plants. It is my first ever gardening task and i am very proud of the result, however, someone is letting their dog regularly poo in it and it is extremely horrid to clean. Any tips on how to deter this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Very difficult, as the dog (or dogs!) have marked your garden as a toilet! As they wander down the street, sniffing, they can smell "your toilet" yards away and think "nearly there".

If it were paved or concrete etc I would wash the whole area in Jeyes Fluid, in an attempt to rid the area of the smell that is only detectable to dogs. However, JF will destroy any plants :(

I'm assuming you don't want to or can't fence the area off so it can't be accessed by any dogs?

Finally, this could be a stray dog or one that's allowed to roam without its owner. If the dog is on a lead, that's one helluva irresponsible and disrespectful dog owner and, whilst they exist, they are rare IME.

On the other hand, it could be fox poo ....? Or even a cat, who particularly like gravelly areas as the texture reminds them of cat litter!
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

If you catch the dog or cat in the act, squirt it with a hose pipe or powerful water pistol. They'll not come back if they think they are going to get a soaking!
Here I go again on my own....

Had the same problem but outside the garage at the back of the house.

It probably will not suit the area that you are concerned with but I sprayed the local area with a strong smelling disinfectant.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

What do you do if the dog is attached to a 6 foot 6 skinhead ?

    Shoot it?!?

Seriously, need to get rid of the scent that is there. Otherwise they'll carry on. I take it that this dog is stray, or escaping it's garden, as I'd hope the owner of the dog wouldn't let it go in your garden?
  • Bengal cats and kittens love water so spraying them will encourage them!! :rotfl:
  • You can buy stuff in a garden centre that cats and dogs hate. Try using it very day for a while until the habit is broken. You can aslo get something which makes a high pitched whine that people cannot hear but animals dislike. You can get those for teenagers as well! Not joking saw it on the news and the civil liberty people wont let councils install them.

Our neighbour's dog used to regularly take great delight in taking an almighty dump right in the middle of our front garden and our neighbour used to find it quite amusing.

    The dog was put down a few weeks ago...sob, sob...damn how I miss it. :D :T :D  :j :o :rotfl:

The only thing we found that stopped our garden from being used as the "local dog Loo" was "Get Off crystals" which we got from the Pet Shop
