Milk Allergy help needed

Options
This is a bit of a long shot but my twins are allergic to cows milk, goats milk and soya milk! I have been given a replcement by the Doctor called nutramigen which gets sicked up immediately. I know that there are some other similar replacements available and I was hoping that some of you out there may have tried others and can tell me which seem to be the best or if they are all just as foul as each other!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Did a search and also came up with this:-

I am sure someone else on here will have first hand experience of what you are going through - good luck with it.
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.
  • How old are the twins Deronda? I know you can buy rice milk and oat milk ( usually from health shops but some supermarkets sell them) but am not sure what age these would be suitable for.
  • Hi there,

I'm absolutely not bashing you for bottle feeding here, I'm just wondered how old the twins are because there's a chance you could continue breastfeeding with reliable advice & support. People tend not to consider that as an option as they think that once bottles are introduced thats the end of the road breastfeeding wise. I'd suggest you call National Childbirth Trust Breastfeeding line for infomation on this (or you can PM me, I'm a BF peer supporter who's helped women BF multiple births).
NCT will also be able to advise you or point you in the direction of someone who can advise you on the allergy thing (PM me if you have trouble finding the number & I'll send it on to you - don't have it to hand now).

Do they definately have an allergy to all those milks? Have the been tested for the allergy? Only ask because Cows milk contains lactose & cows milk protien, whereas soy milk contains neither of those things, so there's nothing in common with them to suggest they'd be allergic to both. Health professionals frequently confuse Cows milk Protien intolerence/allergy with lactose intolerence/allergy. Try looking on http://www.drgreene.com for advice. (stick milk allergy in the search box for a few relevant articles to start you off).

  • I sympathise with your situation, as I myself have a daughter allergic to milk (and egg). Luckily for me though she can tolerate soya though. (note -the most common allergies for children are milk, egg, soya and wheat - and the good news is that they usually grow out of them by 3-5 years).

I actually managed to breastfeed though - although this meant I had to also follow a diet of no diary or egg, as my daughter would get the allergen through my milk!
We had Progestimil prescribed for us, although I never had to use it, as it was just for back up if the BF didn't work etc. I since found that it may even have some milk traces but that it should be okay becuase it has been processed so much it shouldn't cause a problem. This may be worth trying, although I don't know about soya content in it.

Let me know if I can help you any more, as I know what it is like, especially when you start thinking about food too.

    Good luck.

Hi, my daughter also struggled with cows milk and so we tried powdered rice milk. It worked a treat. My wife is Swedish and so we were able to buy powdered rice milk specially for babies in Sweden. It worked out at same money as other powdered milks. We did find it hard to get in UK but if interested i can give you a website which does mail order.good luck.

My twins are 2 1/2 so not breast feeding. Tried this with them and my new baby but did not go very well for me!

Yes they have been tested as they are also allergic to egg.

We are gradually working our way through all the alternatives and seeing dietician next week. Both twins now refusing to drink anything that slightly resembles milk as these alternatives taste so horrible. Lets hope we get some luck somewhere along the line.

Thank you for all your replies.
  • i would try for a bit longer with the nutramigen, but agree it smells and tastes viel. there are others you can try but are not as broken down as the nutramigen.thay are:
Progestimol made by the same people meed/johston
Petti jounior made by cow and gate
    neocate
the top one is where you would go first as the second has low amount milk protein in if i remeber right.
they soon get use to the nutramigem trust me.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

Well if they are 2 1/2 then talk to the dietician about other ways they can get what they need other than through milk. There are calcium supplements available: I didn't give any of mine anything with cows milk in until they were over a year old, and used to mix a liquid calcium supplement in with breakfast.
Signature removed for peace of mind

If they are 2 1/2 is it still so important that they get milk? Milk is the major source of food for first 12 months but as we get older it is less important & from a evolutionary point of view, human milk was the only milk we had, once weaned we wouldn't get milk from another source.
I'm sure you'll feel better when you see the dietician, I imagine s/he'll be able to give advice on how to get the nutrients found in milk from other foods.
  • hi my daughter is 19 months old and is allergic to cows milk, she has rice milk and soya milk, but prefers the rice milk (i sometimes mix it with robinsons for milk, they do flavours like banana etc, or choco powder and warm it up for her). Both rice and soya are available with added calcium.
