  • Might give Autoaid a try otherwise I am probably going to stick with GEM Motoring Assist who are a WHICH? best buy and if you are a new buyer offer their Recovery Extra (joint) policy for the price of the Recovery extra (single) policy which is £86. Joint covers a couple driving any car.

My renewal is £106.40 but i always ring them and get them to offer me renewal at the new business offer price of £86.

Recovery Extra is their bells and whistles policy including roadside, home start, onward journey etc.

Are you sure about recommending First Call for the comprehensive package, look at the reviews here: http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews101817.html

    compares unfavourably to most others:

I'm going to give Autonational Rescue a go: http://www.autonational.co.uk/autonational/breakdown_cover.jsp?source=broadplace

Comprehensive package = £66 including £30 discount, 25% no claims discount. The £66 is for 15 months, so this works out cheaper and with cashback of 17.17% cashback with Topcashback (and probably some others) I estimate the equivalent cost for 1 year could be as low as £40. Will let you know if cashback doesn't track and if I have cause to use their services.

Martin Lewis must own shares in the company to still recomend them, They are probably the worst company I have ever dealt with.
    Lets not use quidco
  • Anyone who recommends this needs to rethink things.

I have been with them for 2 years because they were selling what I wanted at the time. Luckily I had never needed them.....until last week.

The exhaust on my car broke and although I could drive it, I was told it wasn't advisable. Because of this, I called First Call and they said because the car was drivable they were not coming to help me get to a garage.

This meant that I had to drive my car (with a 4 year old in the back) to a local garage 30 minutes away (I was in the middle of nowhere) who said I shouldn't have driven it.

I will not be renewing with them this year, you can guarantee that.

Stay far away from this company.

Why was it inadvisable to drive it with a broken exhaust?

(The exhaust centres get all their business from cars being driven in with broken exhausts)
  • Europ Assistance were wonderful last year when OH put petrol in the diesel car in France - the pump was black and next to a green one!
Got us recovered to the dealer then put up in a hotel overnight which was covered on the insurance. Having someone on the phone who could talk the lingo to the garage and the tow truck was magic as I just get by in French. They kept us in touch by text and call and it was a good service.
Maybe a little more expensive - I bought annual cover including personal travel insurance - but I'm thinking I'll go with them again as I certainly had my money's worth!.
  • just a nice money-saving tale from yesterday, when my AA cover was about to expire (joint cover, roadside, relay policy). I've been a member 11 years and also have A car insurance.

I got my renewal letter quoting £149 (last year I paid £98 after haggling). A new member would get the same cover £96. So I called them hoping to get at least this price.

I was very nice and friendly and just asked if it was the best price they could offer. After being transferred, I spoke to a lovely lady who said they could apply the same discount as 12months ago and quote me £105.

I calmly said I'd seen better deals elsewhere online so I'll go away and think about it. Naturally she tried to stop me and make the sale. I made the point that as a new member I could get it for £96. She told me it was actually £115, I said I had it onscreen in front of me at £96 (which is true). She went away, came back and said it was £104 on her screen but that should we do me a discount as before and quote me £91.

I thought about asking for a further reduction as I'm an insurance holder too, but thought I won't push it, as I've got a great reduction and paying less than I did last year.

So for a pleasant 10min phone call, I got my quote reduced from £149 to £91 :)

(i know it's probably not the cheapest cover i could get, but i was happy)

For breakdown cover, Quoteline Direct use a recovery company called Mondial.

Quoteline are honest and helpful, unfortunately I cannot say the same for Mondial Assistance.

Extremely reluctant to provide me with the service that I am entitled to 'full breakdown cover'. To get out of fulfilling obligations, I was fed false information on numerous separate occasions. I could not locate any of this info within their terms and conditions and when I challenged them on it, they refused to provide me with any evidence to support their claims. I was fobbed off with feeble excuses. I cannot stand dishonesty. Not impressed!

Also I was not impressed with one of their methods used to obtain further money from new members. They say in the "unlikely" event that they cannot validate new cover taken out in the time assistance is required, they will ask for credit/debit card details and will deduct £140+ from you if they cannot validate your cover. They will refund you if you can prove that you have valid cover.

Surprise surprise, Mondial was unable to validate my cover when I called them for assistance and I was promptly asked to provide my card details. I was wary about doing this and therefore, told them that I would call back at a later date when they were able to validate my cover. Given the problems I have had with them I'm glad I declined giving my card details.

I'm extremely disappointed with Mondial Assistance. I will not renew cover with them at the end of 12 months.
