    Johanne you've forgotten :

    Sweet & sour chicken
    Meringues

And Mrs Moore's favourite saying "Tables are for crumbs not bums!" :rotfl: As you can tell, I also went to the same school as Johanne and our brother but there is nearly 7 years between me and Johanne and 13 between me and little brother and the difference in what is "cooked" is amazing! I will admit that I am totally appauled at the standards of Home Economics these days. I honestly can't remember anything else from my lessons, except for trying to make "cereal bars" in third year seniors and finding it the most boring 6 lesson project EVER!

Oh, and whats the matter with using shop bought pastry when you want flakey? I wouldn't even know where to start making it from scratch so I'd rather buy it for the rare occasions I need it :p

Anyway, today I have managed 4 loads of washing, mostly dry, and LOTS of ironing and running around for DD. I put the film "Seven" on (mmm...Morgan Freeman) and I'm only about an hour into it because of interruptions - mainly from DD  Got to wrap 3 ebay parcels and then work out a menu plan for the next week. Going to watch the end of seven hopefully and How Clean Is Your House? If I can manage to stay awake then I might watch Most Haunted on FTN ;)

Edited to say : My brain is somewhere else today, I meant to say
    Well done Pooky!!!!! :T

    Evening folks

The one Home Economics lesson that I can remember is when we made Salad Nicoise. Oooh, so tricky.................... Toffee was the most difficult - especially when I had to try to eat it :rotfl:

Anyway, OH and I have got curry tonight - out of a jar I'm afraid :( Shame on me - but the sauce was dirt cheap from Netto. :D

just made some burgers in a bun for my tea using my new grill.. (sorry to go on but REAL FOOD! :D ) Cheap meal really..as i used 2 huge barmcakes that were reduced, organic burgers (still got some left over from the 50 extra clubcard point promo in tesco a few weeks back) and finished off the salad i had. Which usually i would have thrown away because it had gone all gooey - but i salvaged the bits i could and have managed to get at least 3 more meals out of it - whereas pre MSE i would have just thrown the whole lettuce and all the packs of tomatoes etc straight in the bin without trying to find the OK stuff. :)

Now im off to watch the rest of how clean is your house and then im finally heading to tesco - saved it till this late to get some bargains in the reduced section - hopefully!

  • Hello everyone...

Think from the time of your post you may have had a little more sleep PP.. hope so it will help you feel better.

A big hug to all those needing one.

Can I have a moan please.. feel very down.. it's not me to be like this.. I have just had enough.

DH works away at the moment monday to friday and am getting sick it! I work full time shifts and am trying to raise 3 children, am so tired but can not sleep when I go to bed as I am always thinking of what needs to be done, the next day or the next week! I am trying to balance a stressful job, all the money matters, all the cleaning, cooking, washing, childrens reading and homework, gardening, shopping, sort out holidays and christmas, the lot!.. Why do women have all this pressure?!?!?!

What I would really love is to be a full time mum. I enjoy running the home but I feel under so much pressure with the hours I get to do it..no chance at the moment I earn a good wage and we have built up to much debt to reduce our income.. before MSE we lived way beyond it now we live to it and are able for the first time to save for things we want.

Moan over.. like the rest of us I will get on with it...with a little hope of one day having the time to get my hair cut!

  • Girlpower (((((((hugs)))))))

Been there, done that sweety :) In fact, now that I'm not in "full-time paid employment", I have even less time than before and 'me' time is a very rare commodity. I have 2 kids, look after friends kids after school, have a disabled mum for whom I clean, shop, garden etc etc, do mystery shopping to earn a crust, do all the housework (except his ironing and loading the DW when I've cooked) , do all DIY, some gardening, balance the books and try and make ends meet... oooh, I could go on....

BUT, I'm a woman, I can manage it (even if I shouldn't have to:)) and I'm trying to be OS because I am "only at home with the kids" - Mr TM's phrase!!

What does he do - well, he's a teacher, so goes in for 8, and is home for 5. He does all his marking and lesson prep at school, so in the evening, he can read DS1 a story, iron his shirt for the next day, pack DW, watch his progs and read the paper. Erm, what is a Sunday paper - I see it plop through the letter box on a sunday morning, but have I ever time to read it ? Not on your nelly.

Ooops, this wasn't and in fact isn't a rant. Just a supportive shoulder here. After all, as my mum says, "if you want something doing, ask someone who's busy" - we always find the time, don't we :D:D

Keep your chin up girl and rant away if it helps.

    Learning to save:

Make some shortcrust pastry. Use 8oz flour etc and if you don't know how use the bullet proof recipe at http://www.be-ro.co.uk/f_insp.htm and click on pastry on the right hand side.

Parboil some potatoes for fifteen to twenty minutes - then handling them carefully, cut them into about half inch (1.5cm) cubes. Some people cook them completely and mash them. Your choice. Salt and pepper, butter and cream if mashing to your own taste.

Pre heat the oven to gas mark 5 (190C 375F)

Either cube or grate some cheese.

Cut your pastry into two lumps and line an eight inch pie dish (or oven proof plate).

Either layer or jumble together the potato and cheese (your choice)

Moisten the outer edge with water and lay the second half of rolled out pastry on top. Pierce the top to let the steam out.

    Bake for 35-40 minutes.

If you have any bits of pastry left over you can repeatedly fold some cheese into the pastry (recipe on the bero site) to make cheese straws and bung them in the oven for the last ten minutes or so.
