If a caller gives you the 'phone number to ring check it yourself online before ringing. If they are fraudsters they will give you a number that takes you straight back to them!

That's not the most worrying tactic that fraudsters use. They give you an entirely legitimate number but don't hang up, meaning that you go straight back to them whatever number you call. With some judicious use of fake dialling tones and fake ringing tones they can fool anyone. As far as I'm aware the only way to be 100% sure is (1) to Google it as you suggest and (2) to use a different phone line.
  • I nearly ignored my message until reading this site. Turns out someone had cloned card and tried to take 88p from an American site as a test. I agree it is not a good system because the automated voice sounds like a hoax but given they texted and phoned both my numbers that was always unlikely. I am actually pleased that Santander were on the ball and glad that this website led to me ringing them back.

Nope, Santander have blocked my card twice because they thought my transactions looked fraudulent (they weren't).

What they do is, they just block it and then leave you to figure out what they've done when you try to pay for something in a shop and it rejects your card. Leaving you wondering wth is going on, and then when you call them about it... THEN they tell you why they blocked it. -.-
  • this number rang my husbands mobile today on various occasions its an automated recording saying they are Santander fraud line regarding activity on your account and also at the same time a text came through more or less saying the same thing but asking for a Mr David king to get in touch asap, now the first thing is we do not have a Santander account and never have but also my husbands name is not Mr David King. But he has also received another call from 02030596525 saying the same thing. Does anyone have any advice please.

  • had a call and a text from these yesterday. from 0845 3512276. as i am deaf and cant hear on the phone, i went straight to my branch and explained the problem. they immediately said that they first need to check that the call is genuine!!!! apparently, other banks call you to try and get you to change over to them......

they did something on their computer and said that there hasnt been a block put on my account, nor my credit card, and no problems have been noted and then did something with my cards on the cash machine, reporting that as far as they could see, all was fine. have used my cards since then and all seems ok.

because i am deaf, i dont answer any calls from numbers i dont know. people who know me, know NOT to call, but text. and this morning, at 8.45 i have had another missed call from them.
