Anyone had "Fraud team at Santander" call them?

Over the weekend on upwards of 10 occasions I had phone calls from 0845 351 2275 saying that it is the Fraud Team at Santander.

It then asked me to confirm my phone number for them to confirm my account... I didn't give any details at hung up at this point.

It called my house phone and mobile when I hung one up the other rang and then rang back after another 2 hours.

Did anyone else have these calls over the weekend?

I even rang the bank on the usual number and they said there was nothing wrong with my account...

Any ideas?

Yes, I have had a couple of calls from them and they were legit.

The automated voice will ask you to confirm from a list of three which is your date of birth to confirm your identity.

In my case, I had entered the expiry date from my debit card incorrectly when ordering something online. The company (Amazon) had tried to process it several times and so Santander froze payment until it had checked with me that it was ok.

The automated voice told me the payments that were made and how much they were for and then asked me to confirm if they were ok to be processed. I wasn't sure, so I waited for an operator to come on the line and talk to me.

I have to admit, I was worried the first time that I had received one of these calls, but my mind was put to rest once I had actually spoken to someone.

    Hope this helps.

Yes I had one a few months back now on a Sunday. Like you I was wary of giving any details, but the girl gave me a number for me to call the fraud dept myself. It turned out there had been suspicious activity buying on the Internet that day using my card details & when they confirmed that it wasn't me making the purchases, my card was blocked straight away.

I was really impressed that they were so on the ball to notice & act when there is suspicious activity that they strongly suspect is fraud on an individuals card.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Yes, I've had that. Had to confirm the DOB from a list. Then the voice reelled off a list of payments that had gone through my account and I had to confirm I'd made them. I did ring Abbey first as I was dubious about the call, they gave me the fraud dept no to ring.

I get these calls regularly ,in fact I got one this morning and once you have satisfied yourself that the first one is genuine then there is nothing to worry about when you get others . My problem is knowing what makes their automated system think the transactions are suspicious . Todays transactions are the first list to contain one that I did not not recognise ..the rest on each occasion have had nothing that I could see should have given cause for concern ..all being established companies .

I have had these from Nationwide, it is a good system BUT - as a matter of course I never answer any questions over the telephone even to confirm my Tel. number. It is quite easy to check the number that rang you [https://www.saynoto0870.com] and ring them back, that way I KNOW I am secure.
@molley - IMHO it is better that they check any they think suspicious than your card being cloned and you having to chase refunds, etc.

Had that but it was OK, though they cancelled the card because I did not recognise one of the three they mentioned.
  • Sorry for resurrecting an ancient thread!

OH had a missed call then text message from this number 08453512275. Figure it's in reference to his order from the Apple website last night.

It does appear to be genuine, yes, but I can't find this number on the Santander website at all which I thought was very weird.

Is there an alternative landline number he could ring from his mobile? I've checked saynoto and there's one listing and one alternative. Just wary about the alternative number being genuine if that makes sense! :o

  • Considering that there is a small chance they may be calling because someone has cloned your card/stolen your identity etc etc, personally I would not waste time looking for a landline number to call them on.... At least he could call the general support number and ask to be given the number for the fraud dept, if he is worried about getting a genuine number.

The reason you can't find it on the Santander website is because it's not a number that you can use to speak to someone .It's the number Santander use on their Automated System which is generated when what they regard as suspicious transactions get thrown up . The message that your OH got says it is from Santanders Fraud Dept . I don't have the Fraud Dept direct line number to hand but calling the Santander CS Number should either get you the number or get you put through if you persist in asking them . I have used the automated system a few times ( as small Internet transactions seem to generate more calls than bigger ones ) and it works well..
Don't ignore these calls as it is likely that the card has been "Locked" until such time as you / your OH respond
