Professional firms of Chartered Accountants. - We are ACCA rather than ACA, but we are required to get two references by our regulatory body, they come and 'audit' us every few years, and want to see proof of this.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -

I think it depends on work place, the head and teacher (and kiddies) were happy with my work...some of the sch govs decided that from the reference I was likely to be "unreliable" - as the reference said and withdrew the job!![/QUOTE]
"Unreliable", isn't less then glowing in my opinion. "Average" is less then glowing. My point is, an employer who started you before a reference is received probably doesn't really want to recruit again without good cause, and is likely to a take a punt on you knowing they can be rid fairly easily if you don't work out."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." Hi, I'm very sorry that your job did not work out and I would make some helpful suggestions about how to gloss over the reference situation.
1. If you are studying, use a tutor as one referee of the two you would normally be required to give.
2. Do some charity work (e.g for clerical work apply to assist for a few shifts a week at a CAB) and use the volunteer coordinator or office manager there as a referee.
3. Give a reference that is not your most recent employer on the grounds that the other person was your line manager while you were doing work more relevant to this hoped for post.
4. If you received any letters from grateful customers or clients while at your last place of work include these as supporting documents to an application.
5. Obtain a temp job at a low grade (such as in a call centre.) You will find that references are not checked, or at least probably not before you start (I know from experience) and you can use your new boss as a reference for your next 'real' job.
6. You could describe travel, second jobs, voluntary work undertaken in those two years and not refer at all to your paid employment. This will make your time look full and won't trip you up because you really did do what you describe, just not exclusively.0 -
Hi Folks
Sorry to bring this up again, but I have managed to get a full time permanent accounts job at a local company. This was through a recruitment agency. I think the agency did not check my references, although they did ask for reference details. So, I don't think my current employer is aware of the fact that I was dismissed from my previous job.
I have now been in this new job for about 3 weeks. My contract with this new employer was given to me in the 1st week I started. However, now my new employer is asking for a reference from my previous employer (from where I was dismissed).
I rang the HR dept of my previous employer who said that if on the reference there is a direct question relating to reason for leaving, then are obliged to write 'dismissed.'
My question is - If this happens, can my present employer withdraw the job offer and dismiss me from this current job if the reference they receive from my previous employer says 'dismissed'? And if so, can I do anything about it?
Thanks in advance for your response.0 -
In answer to your question yes they can and you cant do anything about it legally. You could talk to the new place and just explain what had happened and that you had now learned to do XYZ if in this situation again. If they are happy with you then they may keep you on and you may be worrying for nothing.
Im in this situation too and my old company will not divulge the dismissal even if asked as its not in the policy, and just confirm dates.
If they get rid of you I think the best option would be a short stint of voluntary work and then use this as the most recent employer.
Hope it works out for you.0 -
Hi
Thanks for the advice. However, do you think I should talk about this to the new employer asap, or wait until this reference arrives back and then talk to them (if the reference mentions dismissal)?0 -
Tough shout, legally unless they ask you about why you left your previous position then you dont have to tell them.
Its difficult because why mention it, if its not going to be brought up? but there again it might be and then its difficult isnt it.
What I would do is ring the previous H.R and ask if the new company has asked if you were dismissed and if they disclosed. If they have then I would get in first and say how much you are enjoying the new company work colleagues etc and how you wish to be open and honest and tell them that you didnt leave your past job on the best on terms but you have learned from the experience and now are ready to move on in a positive way etc. i would be going in a bit early and be very positive etc. Hopefully if they are nice people they will understand and give you a chance. They will have probably come across this before as lots of people apparently get dismissed.
If they didnt ask in the reference request then I would nt tell them.0 -
I was sacked or told either i resign or i will be sacked
I was only with the company 7 months so if and when i reply for any futures employed positions i will just delete it from my employment history .
I'm currently self-employed as i feel this is my best option for now but things might change in the future.0 -
Hi
Many thanks indeed for the advice.
Do you think it would be better if I go into the office tomorrow morning and mention the fact of how much I enjoy working here & be grateful of the chance given to prove my skills, regardless of what is mentioned in the reference?0 -
Absolutley,very beneficial.
Lots of bossess love this, but you have to be sincere and not overdo it.0
