I have exactly the same problem when I'm snapping my dogs. After experimenting, I've found using manual focus the best idea. Roughly set the focus and then try to move closer or further away to get it sharp. It really does take practice, but is so rewarding to get just one good shot.:D

Pippi - That's a gorgeous picture! I didn't even notice the focus at first, just the stunning colours.

This is my memory of my trip to Disneyland Paris over the weekend......the ice and snow really reflect just how bone numbingly cold it was at -16....utterly magical though.
