Confused re: benefits in redundancy

My husband has been made redundant - he has another couple of weeks on the payroll. We are doubtful that another job will come up in the coming 2 or so weeks therefore I'm trying to investigate benefits we could receive.

From the Entitled To calculator it looks as though we will get nothing but the child benefit we already receive. No tax credits and even no mention of JSA? When I first did the calculator, inputting less info, a range of bens were suggested inc working tax credit, child tax credit and JSA. My yearly salary will be £37500 (just starting a new job next week).

We have a 2 year old son. I fear he will have to come out of nursery and we will lose our place there (few and far between in our neighbourhood), and my husband will become a childminder for him leaving little time for job hunting.

Confused & concerned. Any advice most welcome.

Many thanks and good luck to all looking for work.

How many years has your husband been in full time work? You will not get WTC, but he may qualify for CB JSA.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • 2 years in full time work. I have just done the Direct Gov benefits calculator which does suggest we could get WTC and child tax credit and JSA. No Council Tax ben. But anything will help.

How much has earned so far this financial year? Did he work in the tax year 07/08?

  • P60 for 2009-10 says £29028.00. Not sure about 07-08, will check...

You definitely have too high an income for WTC. WTC are for couples who earn less than approx £17,000 pa between them.

His entitlement to JSA will depend on his NI Conts/ earnings in tax year 07/08.

  • Thanks for your help, much appreciated. This is all a real eye-opener. I guess I have been thinking of benefits as something we should be entitled to due to husband's loss of income. But we could of course live on my income if we didn't have childcare costs to pay. Time to tighten the belts and buckle down to some intensive job hunting.

I assume you are thinking of Child Tax Credits, which is a separate benefit.
