My old aunt and uncle liked to give my children presents that they had bought themselves and not what Id bought and wrapped up for them. One Christmas out came an A line, navy blue, quilted coat for my son aged 4 - with a lovely velvet band and bow around the middle. On seeing this my 10 year old daughter immediately announced to everyone in the room that this was a girl's coat. We all protested fiercely that this was not so (although it was plainly obvious to everyone - other than my aunt and uncle) so every week for the next few months when they visited, my son had to wear this coat out to play - he never knew the difference but we all still giggle at this.

:rotfl: What a brilliant thread, thanks to everyone for posting their stories, I have been laughing out loud at some.

I love the balaclava story and the lady who got her own boots that had been reheeled :rotfl:

Cheered me up no end on a dull and rainy afternoon.

  • I can't think of any strange/weird presents from people... but this is seriously bugging me now! What do all the abbreviations stand for!?!
I get that OH is other-half. MIL is mother in law... but DD and DS for the children? Something daughter, something son? And what about SIL... i presumed it was Son-in-law but SIL is a female??? I'm sure I'm just being incredibly stupid... can someone clear it up please!

    Edit:

just figured SIL is sister in law? still confused =D

Usually DS and DD = Darling/Dearest/Devil Son or Daughter (delete as appropriate!!) There's a guide to all the abbreviations in one of the Sticky Threads at the top of the forum :)
  • Ah cheers =) I had an inclination it might be something like that =)

  • This thread has had me in stiches all day, my very ex MIL gave me and ex hubby a clothes brush as a wedding present, it had a present from Margate printed on it and had been hanging on her wall for years. It was one of the old fashioned nylon hair and orange wood type. All the varnish was crazed it was so old.
But our first christmas together she was a real star, I stupidly got lumberred with cooking christmas dinner, I was only 18 and did not have a clue. She offered to get the meat. Even I knew that turning up on christmas day with raw meat was a nono. So I assumed she would cook it first.
All in all there was 8 of us for christmas dinner she turned up with 8 small slices of Turkey from the supermarket deli, no danger of turkey overload in our house. She then got plastered and announced to all 3 DIL's present that she was not really keen on any of us but she liked me the best. I think it was at that point that I realised what a big mistake I had made.
Never had to spend another christmas with that lot again.
On a plus note MIL of 20 years is wonderful, tells me that she cant face the shops and if I feel like doing shopping for her thats fine otherwise she will write us cheques, they always have at least 3 figures. Very generous.

  • My Auntie always buys me clothes, in the wrong size, and in a style I've never worn and she sees me every month!! (I wear black goth/alternative attire)
Highlights include...a shiny red body warmer and an orange t-shirt (she asked the sales assistant for something "rocky"!...and that's what she came back with!). But every year I have to open her present first cos they make me laugh so much. One top I had for my birthday was opened 4 times cos it made us laugh each time we saw it!!!
I love this thread, thanks for making me smile

My boyfriend got me the following:

First Christmas together - A watch (lost property from his place of work) He only told me it was lost property after I'd been wearing it for two hours
Second christmas - A screwdriver set.

Neadless to say I don't expectmuch as presents!!!
Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.
