A few years ago I received a set of 3 avon soaps from my grandmother. All very nice except that they were the same 3 bars of soap that I had given to her the christmas before. She'd obviously forgotten and I didn't have the heart to say anything!
  • For my son's 1st xmas my father-in-law (bear in mind also both my parents have died & my mother-in-law is also dead so my son only has 1 grandparent) gave him a really horrible cuddly toy which I know cost £5 from the corner store and which had fluff coming off it-highly appropriate for a 9mth old! I wouldn't mind, but my FIL every year gives us a list of things he "wants" (no please or thank-you) all of which cost at least £30!!

We get our own back now, we tell him exactly what to get our son & make sure it's as expensive as the gift he wants. It works!

I moved out (kicked out more like!) the next year and went to live with my father.

One year my BIL bought my MIL a walking, talking 'Big Bird' from Sesame Street.

Needless to say she was not impressed!

My OH's Grandad used to give us a £10 Argos voucher to share between 5 of us! He didn't even have to fork out for the voucher though as he used to get £40 worth each Christmas from his pension company.

My SIL and her family used to get the same and there were five of them too. At least he was consistent.

my grandma gives me a card with £25 in and a note that i must give my oh the fiver, they get on really well with each other i cant imagien why she doesnt give it to him directly. hehe! :)

Don't think I've ever had anything horrendous and my wife has now learned that I prefer things that can be consumed/worn, ie don't clutter up the house.

A few years ago a friend (not a close friend, admittedly) gave my wife a set of velveteen padded coathangers. We do actually use them but we were left wondering what kind of thought processes would lead anyone to "Hey, velveteen coathangers! That's just what Mrs G would want for Christmas!"

I suspect that thought may have closely followed, "Aaargh, I really should have remembered to get Mrs G a present. Oh, XYZ gave me these last Christmas and they're still in unused condition." ;)

My parents could never be accused of being mean just the opposite but it does get a bit confusing:rolleyes: , the year before last they turned up with a card and said that they thought christmas was far too commercial now so they were opting out (everyone bought for them that year not knowing their new beliefs until the day:rotfl: ) then last year I got a pair of black opaque tights XL  from primark(and its the size that hurt the most:D ) and this year........................they want to buy me a new suite:T See what I mean? :confused:confusing. Anyway very glad its this year!

When I was a kid my mum and her sister fell out and for as many years as i can remember they exchanged Martini Bianco (very large bottle) and a Harveys bristol cream (large) problem was it was the same bottle saved to give back the next christmas:rotfl:Those bottles certainly travelled!

I got a football rattle from my ex one christmas - hate footy never watch it!!

Love this thread its been so much fun to read:T :j

I love this thread, too. How do people get away with it ? Anyway it has given me some good laughs. How about this: I have a sister who is v well off (rich husband) Every year they give the 4 of us too many, too expensive things (nothing wrong there I hear you thinking). But we are a lot poorer than they are and only have two daughters (as opposed to their 4, and also 8 grandchildren) So to start I decided that I wouldn't give all their grandchildren presents - I felt a worm but I am only a partly-unknown greataunt, and I made a modest donation to charity. Then I decided to buy just one small but incredibly witty (and if poss, cheap without looking it) thing for each pair of their sons and daughters and partners (otherwise 8 presents). But year before last very bad moneywise so I said to sister 'Could we have a truce this year and not exchange presents, and I'll give some money to a charity' and I thought she agreed. until the day before Xmas when I turned up at hers with cards for them all, and she had TWO big laundry baskets heaped with giant presents in the hall waiting for us. I felt angry, mortified, fed up that we never have any spare cash no matter what we do while she doesn't know the meaning of the word 'poor' (yes, and jealous too probably). So last year I bought them all something cheap but big looking, and what did she do ? Gave money to Oxfam for goats(which I entirely approve of), so gave us, and our daughters a small plastic goat each to symbolise this. We never seem to be in step. This year I am going to make a donation to charity and she can do what she wants since we seem to be so constantly out of tune. (For my birthday last year she gave me jump leads) Not exactly in the spirit of goodwill to all really..........
