My problem is I'm quite little (height) so when I do put on weight, which I have, I'm almost instantly a mitchelin man. When he weighed me I was 9 stone, and he told me off!

I think my legs weigh more than that...

I find that I have a tendency not to sit correctly, ie, sit with one foot underneath me, which really doesn't help posture much. But agree with KC, having gone to a school where they were constantly shouting "posture girls, posture. Pull those stomach muscles in!" I do tend to stop quite quickly if I find myself slouching.

Ergonomic keyboards are quite difficult to work with at first, but lots of people find them helpful.

One of the things the safety officer at my last place said is that the reason a lot of people have trouble with keyboards is because they type with their wrists down on the desk, and so their fingers are facing upwards. Back in the days of manual typewriters, which were more effort to work with, you were taught to hold your arms at right angles and drop your hands to let gravity do the work. Don't know how true it is.

A frequent reader de-lurking to say that for manual typewriters we were taught to hold our arms just as you say. We were supposed to have the chair at the right height to do this - I think some of the problems we have are due to using our keyboards on surfaces that are too high.
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?

Hmm yes.. wrists on desk, legs crossed :o I think part of the problem is that for my little legs to reach the ground, my chair needs to be quite low. Hmm. *fiddles with chair* Partly I think I like being low down cos I feel like I'm hiding. *uncrosses legs*

I really need to make a proper effort with this - was thinking I should do a regular posture check until it becomes habit.. maybe once an hour or something *uncrosses legs again.. how did they get back there* or everytime I get a new email.. I dunno.

Anyway, I did very little last night apart from lying on the floor and cuddling a hot water bottle. Cat gave me a bit of claw acupuncture in the shoulder too :rotfl:

    *uncrosses legs.. again*

Looking forward to a good rest at the weekend - got no particular plans.

  • I have a pillar in front of my desk and my osteopath suggested I stick a post it on it with "POSTURE" written on :D

    I haven't done this :rotfl:

but at least he has got me into the habit of thinking about it more often, he said that's a great start - so every time you get an email is a brilliant idea!

he and my harp teacher sit on swiss balls when they are working on their computers, and I have wondered about trying this on my work from home days. Not sure it's a goer for the office!

Someone on here always used to sit on a ball at their desk... not sure I could do that in the office either but I have got one at home (although not blown it up since I moved in with Mr S as not sure if cat will attack it!)0

I'm convinced it would be better if I could work from home a bit - wander around when it suited me etc, but apart from the occasional day that's not really on unfortunately... so have to make the best of what I've got for now. Have just moved everything about a bit and it seems a bit better. The email thing could be interesting on busy days!

I was giggling the whole way through this, even the claw acupuncture :)

As for walking around a bit at work - do it purposefully! If you need to get up and stretch your legs, and for no other reason, walk around like you're terribly important! No one will say, what are you doing, surely?

It's the waving my arms about that looks a bit mad :rotfl:I came across these yesterday - http://jennifercluff.blogspot.com/2008/08/stretching-loosening-exercises-for.html - exercises for flute players.. the gorilla one sounds fun :D

    Morning :D,

I sympathise on the pain, your legs uncrossing made me giggle - just like me, I do sometimes raise my chair & sit cross legged on it - they laugh at me but I dont care :p

My only issue now is pain in my right wrist when using the lappie at home, I'm trying to learn to use my left hand more on the trackpad - should be easy as I'm left handed anyway .... but so used to using the right one for a mouse etc it's quite tough to remember.

You should take a regular eye break when using a 'puter anwyay, so just incorporate a bit of stretching into that, in a purposeful manner - of course ;).
