Possibly (though I think I might have to have some sort of assessment first... grumbles) ... a lot of it is my own fault though, I know how I should sit and type but I don't.. plus sitting in silly positions with the laptop on the sofa at home etc :o

  • Mine get worse with working too, especially if doing alot of typing.

Hope you find a solution, I actually saw the dr about mine, who quite bluntly told me (not that I'm inferring anyone has this issue) to lose weight as mine were agrivated by fluid/weight gain. On the dr/medical scale thing I was 1 1/2 stone overweight, I know this cos he showed me after weighing me and measuring me, complete humiliation, having gone in only for my wrists or so I thought - lol. TBH he was less than kind, but I do have splints for my wrists which I think hurt more than the sore wrists, I had carpal tunnel when preggers (weight gain) so I still have them. That was really bad by the end of pregancy I couldn't turn taps on....................

My problem is I'm quite little (height) so when I do put on weight, which I have, I'm almost instantly a mitchelin man. When he weighed me I was 9 stone, and he told me off!

Not that I'm suggesting that you are or any of this is relevant at all, OK, I'll stop now

I am at the heavy end of what I should be (not saying which end is heaviest though!) but I think the problem is more general fitness, lack of core strength and general rubbish posture. I've been to Alexander Technique and Pilates both of which helped a bit but I'm really lazy at keeping these things up.

Was reading the other day about offices that have 'standing desks' so people aren't sitting down all day.. can see how that would help.

Mr Daffs had a couple of slipped discs years ago, and religously did alexander techniuque for ages, which really helped. He also had an adjustable desk, and a high stool for work, which also really helped. Something to look into maybe?

Pippi, can't believe your doc! there's ways of delivering things like that if they are absolutely necessary - and that isn't one of them!
  • ouch poor wrists :( might be worth mentioning to your teacher at your next lesson too, I have had dreadful neck/arm problems which were made worse by the harp and my bad posture when playing, but are ultimately down to inability to relax and a very stressful time over recent years so your post really resonated here.

my teacher is a Pilates teacher too, and she is fantastic with nagging me and helping. I have been seeing an osteopath as well, he is good but a bit of a torture wielding doom monger :rotfl: I think he would ideally have both me and my teacher playing our harps in a padded glass case and anyone who wanted to hear us would have to come to us rather than the other way round :D

I have had to work really hard to change lots of things but gradually I am starting to see the benefit of sitting properly/playing properly. Engaging my stomach muscles has been the most important breakthrough (or holding my belly in as my teacher calls it :rotfl:)

I find if I do some regular exercise (DVD etc), the warm up/cool down procedure helps me stretch everything out (although anything that involves opening your arms out cross-style makes me scream if I've done a wedding the day before!). And one of the best things I have found is Zumba because you literally shake EVERYTHING!!

sorry to be popping on to nag, but having been there, all I can say is try and be really aware of it now as others have said above - I had been playing again for 2 years before the horrifically painful injury eventually revealed itself, but it absolutely was a result of the build up of a lot of tension. Nag nag nag :D

I do a full time job behind a computer screen and drive a lot which doesn't help either, but am much much more aware of things now and stretch out as much as I can when driving/at work. I may look (even more) daft but I don't care!

good luck with it (and don't let any of the above put you off playing!)

All nagging and tips much appreciated! I've had problems with it before and it was one of the things that made me go back to flute lessons as I knew I'd end up in trouble if I didn't get someone to nag, er, demonstrate proper hand positions etc again.

I do need more exercise - just feels like there aren't enough hours in the day at the moment! Maybe I need to copy your timetabling thing, Lionhearted :)

Totally agree with this - I still try to do this whenever I'm standing up or walking, because of all the ballet I did, it makes a huge difference to your posture.

    Thats a good one too!

:eek::eek: I'd die in a week :eek::eek: Its agony for me to stand in one place - walking hurts, after a while, but standing is like I'm being burned alive :o

Pippi! What strikes me about *everything* that everybody's written is how much physical pain everyone seems to be in - I feel quite bad for wittering on and on about mine on my thread. But I'm really glad everybody's sharing now ...

    Don't feel bad at all!

I wouldn't like to be standing up all the time but the option to do it some of the time might be good. I'm sure I was generally healthier when I worked in shops and was on my feet all day!
